How much does the Fermat WRF HEAVY cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fermat WRF HEAVY that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fermat WRF HEAVY is the largest horizontal boring mill Fermat builds. Its headstock runs between two columns instead of hanging on the side of one, and the vertical travel that results is 6,000/8,000/10,000 mm (236.2/315.0/393.7 in). The smallest Y of this machine is the largest Y of the standard WRF models.
Moving a headstock that high takes more than one drive. Fermat uses 4 servomotors and 4 rack and pinions on the Y axis and lists a rapid feed of 15,000 mm/min (590.6 ipm) for it, alongside 20,000 mm/min (787.4 ipm) along the 4,000 - 28,100 mm (157.5 - 1,106.3 in) bed. The twin-column frame matters for accuracy as much as for speed: a headstock supported on both sides does not twist its column as the ram goes out.
And the ram goes out a long way. Z travel is 1,600 mm (63.0 in) and the boring spindle adds 1,000 mm (39.4 in) in W. Spindle diameter is 150 / 160 mm (5.9 / 6.3 in), with 2,800 rpm or 2,500 rpm as the standard top speeds and 3,500 rpm or 3,200 rpm as options. One drive is listed, for Heidenhain or Siemens controls: 74/91 kW (S1/S6) with 3,349/4,120 Nm.
Workpieces stand on floor plates or on rotary tables, which Fermat rates up to 100 metric tons. The optional table list runs from the T25 at 25,000 kg (55,115 lb) to the T100 at 100,000 kg (220,459 lb).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Y travel of 6,000/8,000/10,000 mm (236.2/315.0/393.7 in)
- Headstock built between two columns, which Fermat says is for maximum stability
- 1,600 mm (63.0 in) ram stroke plus 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of spindle travel
- 4 servomotors and 4 rack and pinions drive the Y axis at 15,000 mm/min (590.6 ipm)
- X travel up to 28,100 mm (1,106.3 in)
Limitations
- Only one drive is listed, 74/91 kW with 3,349/4,120 Nm; the WRF 150 table shows up to 3,349/4,923 Nm
- Power and torque are given for Heidenhain or Siemens controls only
- Spindle diameters stop at 150 / 160 mm (5.9 / 6.3 in); the 180 mm size is offered on the WRF 160/180
- The T20 rotary table is not on this model's list; tables start at the T25 with 25,000 kg (55,115 lb)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The frame. Fermat builds the headstock between two columns, and Y travel is 6,000/8,000/10,000 mm (236.2/315.0/393.7 in). The ram stroke of 1,600 mm (63.0 in) is longer as well; the WRF 160/180 lists 1,200 mm (47.2 in) with 1,500 mm (59.1 in) optional.
02
By 4 servomotors and 4 rack and pinions, according to Fermat's description, for swift and smooth movement. The table gives a Y rapid feed of 15,000 mm/min (590.6 ipm). Z also moves at 15,000 mm/min and W at 10,000 mm/min (393.7 ipm).
03
A boring spindle of 150 / 160 mm (5.9 / 6.3 in) with 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of travel, on an SK 50, BIG+ or HSK100 taper. The speed row reads 2,800 rpm (opt. 3,500 rpm) / 2,500 rpm (opt. 3,200 rpm), one pair per spindle size. Power is 74/91 kW (S1/S6) and torque 3,349/4,120 Nm.
04
The part does not sit on the machine, so the limit is the floor plate or rotary table. Fermat says floor plates and rotary tables hold up to 100 metric tons, and the optional rotary tables are listed as T25 25,000 kg, T50 50,000 kg, T60 60,000 kg, T80 80,000 kg and T100 100,000 kg.
