Overview

The Haas ST-20LY is the long-bed, Y-axis variant of the redesigned ST-20 platform. It takes the same re-engineered castings as the standard ST-20Y and stretches the Z-axis to 813 mm (32 in), giving shops 241 mm (9.5 in) of extra turning length for shafts, long fittings, and barstock parts that won't fit in the standard bed.

The spindle is identical to the ST-20Y: an A2-6 nose delivering 14.9 kW (20 hp) and 203 Nm (150 ft-lb) at 500 RPM, topping out at 4,000 RPM. Max swing is 533 mm (21 in) over the cross slide with a cutting diameter of 298 mm (11.75 in). The 63.5 mm (2.5 in) drawtube bore handles common bar stock sizes without a bore upgrade.

Y-axis travel is +/-50.8 mm (+/-2.0 in), same as the shorter ST-20Y. The 12-station BMT-65 turret runs live tooling at 6,000 RPM with 3.7 kW (5 hp), so cross-drilling, flat milling, and tapping happen on the lathe instead of requiring a second setup on a VMC.

Haas runs the NGC control on every machine they build. If your operators already know the Haas mill side, the transition to the lathe is measured in hours, not weeks. Conversational programming, G-code, and canned cycles are all there.

Priced at $90,000-$120,000 configured, the ST-20LY fills a gap for shops that need Y-axis capability on longer parts without jumping to the ST-30 platform. It's the sweet spot between the standard ST-20Y and the heavier ST-30LY for medium-length work.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 813 mm (32 in) Z-axis travel handles shafts and long fittings that won't fit the standard ST-20Y bed
  • Same 63.5 mm (2.5 in) drawtube bore and Y-axis capability as the standard model at only a modest price bump
  • BMT-65 turret with 6,000 RPM live tooling enables done-in-one work on longer parts
  • NGC control consistency across the Haas lineup minimizes operator retraining costs
  • $30-50K cheaper than comparable Mazak or Okuma long-bed Y-axis lathes
  • Strong Haas dealer network with same-day availability on common wear items

Limitations

  • 14.9 kW (20 hp) spindle is modest for heavy roughing in stainless or Inconel on longer parts
  • No sub-spindle option means back-working operations still require a second setup
  • Longer bed increases footprint without adding rigidity — not ideal for heavy interrupted cuts
  • 3.7 kW (5 hp) live tooling limits aggressive milling operations
  • Y-axis turret alignment drift reported on the ST-20 platform may require periodic service

Best For

Shaft work and long fittings exceeding 572 mm that won't fit the standard ST-20Y Job shops running mixed part families with occasional long-part requirements Production bar work needing Y-axis cross-drilling and milling on parts up to 813 mm Shops already on the Haas NGC platform looking to add long-bed Y-axis capability Hydraulic cylinder, pump shaft, and drive shaft manufacturers

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the Haas ST-20Y and ST-20LY?

The ST-20LY adds 241 mm (9.5 in) of Z-axis travel, going from 572 mm to 813 mm (32 in). The spindle, Y-axis, turret, and live tooling are identical. The longer bed adds modest cost and footprint. Choose the LY variant when your part lengths regularly exceed the standard bed.

02 What does a Haas ST-20LY cost?

Base price starts around $90,000. With typical options like live tooling, tailstock, parts catcher, and chip conveyor, expect $105,000-$120,000 configured. The long-bed premium over the standard ST-20Y is roughly $5,000-$8,000.

03 Can the ST-20LY run with a bar feeder?

Yes. The 63.5 mm (2.5 in) drawtube bore accepts standard bar feeders. The longer bed is particularly well-suited to bar feeder operation on longer cutoff lengths, reducing the number of bar changes per shift.

04 Is the ST-20LY rigid enough for heavy cuts on long parts?

For aluminum and mild steel at moderate depths of cut, the ST-20LY handles long parts well. For aggressive roughing in stainless or tough alloys on long, slender shafts, you may find the 14.9 kW spindle and lighter casting limiting compared to the ST-30 platform.
