Overview
The Citizen Miyano BNE-42 is a multi-function fixed-headstock CNC lathe with live tooling and sub-spindle capability, designed for complete part processing on components up to 42mm in diameter. Building on the BNC-42's precision foundation, the BNE-42 adds the ability to perform milling, cross-drilling, and tapping operations in the same cycle as turning—eliminating secondary operations and reducing total part cost.
The BNE-42 features a 6,000 RPM main spindle and a sub-spindle for back-working operations, enabling parts to be machined on both ends without manual intervention. The Y-axis capability allows off-centerline features like flats, keyways, and eccentric holes to be cut directly on the lathe. Live tooling stations spin at up to 6,000 RPM, providing enough speed for efficient milling and drilling in aluminum, steel, and even stainless steel.
Citizen's Miyano fixed-headstock design delivers inherent rigidity advantages over sliding-headstock machines for chucked parts with low length-to-diameter ratios. The thermally symmetric cast iron construction minimizes dimensional variation during extended production runs, and the machine's compact envelope makes efficient use of floor space. The Mitsubishi M80 control handles the multi-axis synchronization needed for simultaneous front and back operations.
The BNE-42 occupies a sweet spot for shops that need more than basic turning but don't require the full complexity of a twin-turret mill-turn center. It handles the majority of small turned parts with secondary features—think automotive solenoid bodies, medical instrument handles, hydraulic cartridge valves, and electronic housings—in a single setup with the precision and repeatability that Citizen's Miyano brand is known for.
For shops transitioning from separate turning and milling operations to done-in-one manufacturing, the BNE-42 represents a significant productivity upgrade without the programming complexity and operator skill requirements of larger multi-tasking machines.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new Citizen Miyano BNE-42 typically costs between $120,000 and $180,000 depending on tooling configuration, options, and automation accessories. The sub-spindle and live tooling add $30,000-$50,000 over a comparable BNC-42 base model. Used BNE-42 machines from 2015-2020 can be found for $60,000-$100,000.
02
The BNE-42 and BNJ-42 share the same 42mm bar capacity, but the BNJ-42 adds a second turret for simultaneous front and back operations, significantly reducing cycle times on complex parts. The BNE-42 uses a single turret, which simplifies programming and reduces cost but requires sequential operations. Choose the BNJ for high-volume production; choose the BNE for high-mix environments where programming simplicity matters.
03
The BNE-42 accommodates standard Citizen Miyano live tool holders for axial and radial drilling, tapping, milling, and cross-hole operations. ER-style collet holders and specialized form tool holders are available. The 6,000 RPM live tool speed supports carbide tooling in most materials.
04
Yes, the rigid box-way construction and powerful spindle make the BNE-42 well-suited for stainless steel (303, 304, 316), Inconel, and pre-hardened steels up to approximately 45 HRC. The thermal stability is particularly valuable when machining these materials, as heat generation can cause dimensional issues on less stable platforms.
05
The BNE-42 is compatible with most standard hydrodynamic bar feeders for 42mm bar stock, including models from IEMCA, LNS, FMB, and Edge Technologies. Citizen can supply matched bar feeding solutions for optimal integration and unattended production capability.
