Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford SL-35-2S that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Johnford SL-35-2S is the smallest twin-spindle lathe in the SL range. An 8 in main chuck faces a 6 in sub-spindle chuck across 400 mm (15.7 in) of Z travel, so a part can be turned on one side, handed over and finished on the other without leaving the machine.
The two spindles are deliberately unequal. The main spindle has an A2-6 nose, Ø51 mm (Ø2 in) bar capacity and a 9 / 11 kW (12.1 / 14.8 hp) motor at 4,500 rpm. The sub-spindle is smaller and faster: A2-5, Ø42 mm (Ø1.7 in) bar capacity, 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp), 6,000 rpm. Heavy stock removal belongs on the first side. The second side, usually a facing cut, a chamfer and a bore, runs at higher speed on the lighter spindle.
A single 12-position turret serves both. That keeps the machine simple and compact, 3,933 mm (154.8 in) long and 5,000 kg (11,000 lb), but it also means the spindles do not cut at the same time, and all tools for both sides share twelve stations.
Unlike the larger 2S models, this one has no Y-axis rows in the table. Swing over the cross slide is Ø280 mm (Ø11 in) and X travel 155 mm (6.1 in). Rapids are 16 / 20 / 24 m/min (630 / 787 / 945 ipm) for X1, Z1 and Z2.
It fits bar-fed production of small complete parts: fittings, bushes, nozzle bodies, connector shells. A bar feeder interface and a parts catcher are on the options list.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Main and sub-spindle for both-side machining in one cycle
- Sub-spindle at 6,000 rpm with 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp)
- Compact: 3,933 mm (154.8 in) long, 5,000 kg (11,000 lb)
- Z2 rapid of 24 m/min (945 ipm) for quick part transfer
- 45° bed with box ways on all axes
Limitations
- One 12-position turret serves both spindles
- No Y-axis figures are listed for this model
- Main spindle motor of 9 / 11 kW (12.1 / 14.8 hp), with a one step transmission
- Sub-spindle bar capacity of Ø42 mm (Ø1.7 in) limits the diameter that can be transferred through it

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Main: 8 in chuck, A2-6 nose, Ø51 mm (Ø2 in) bar capacity, 9 / 11 kW (12.1 / 14.8 hp), 4,500 rpm. Sub: 6 in chuck, A2-5 nose, Ø42 mm (Ø1.7 in) bar capacity, 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp), 6,000 rpm. Both have a one step transmission.
02
No. The accessory list states that the sub-spindle replaces the tailstock on the SL-2S series. Long parts are supported by gripping them in the sub-spindle chuck.
03
The table has no Y-axis or power turret figures for this model, and the standard turret is non-driven. A live tool turret in BMT or VDI and a C-axis are listed as options for the series; what applies to this size should be confirmed.
