Overview

The Akira Seiki SL35LMC is the long-bed mill-turn lathe in the 10" chuck class. Cutting length is 940 mm (37 in) and Z travel 1,000 mm (39.4 in), and the tailstock travels 970 mm (38.2 in) on an MT4 quill.

Long shafts are where a C axis and driven tools save the most handling. Keyways, cross-drilled oil holes, flats and end-face tapping can be done while the shaft is still held between chuck and centre, so a part close to a metre long is never re-clamped. The turret is a 12-station VDI40 unit with ER32 live holders and a power-tool speed of 4,000 rpm.

The headstock is the SL35 one: A2-8 nose, 3,500 rpm, 30 HP (22.4 kW) and 727 Nm (536 lb-ft) at peak, a 78 mm (3.1 in) draw tube bore, and a 10" chuck with a 12" option. Maximum cutting diameter is 360 mm (14.2 in). X travel is 235 + 5 mm (9.2 + 0.2 in).

Bed length adds mass. The machine weighs 7,110 kg (15,675 lb) and measures 3,450 x 1,844 mm (135.8 x 73 in). The power requirement is 30 kVA, and rapid feed is 36 m/min (1,417 ipm). A chip drawer is standard with a conveyor optional. The application row lists X+Z+C, so there is no Y axis.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 940 mm (37 in) cutting length with C axis and driven tools
  • 727 Nm (536 lb-ft) of peak torque on an A2-8 spindle
  • Tailstock travel of 970 mm (38.2 in), MT4 quill
  • 78 mm (3.1 in) draw tube bore

Limitations

  • Maximum cutting diameter of 360 mm (14.2 in)
  • X+Z+C only; off-centre milling needs a Y-axis machine
  • 7,110 kg (15,675 lb) and 3,450 x 1,844 mm (135.8 x 73 in)
  • Driven-tool power is not usable from the maker's page
