Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Akira Seiki SL40 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Akira Seiki SL40 is the big-bore, geared-head lathe of the SL line. It carries a 15" chuck as standard and an 18" chuck as an option on an A2-11 spindle nose, with a 103 mm (4.1 in) draw tube bore. Peak torque is 2,944 Nm (2,171 lb-ft), which the table marks as coming through a gear box, and peak power is 60 HP (44.7 kW).
Those figures put it in a different class from the SL35 and its 727 Nm (536 lb-ft). Top speed drops to 2,500 rpm accordingly. This is a machine for large-diameter work in steel: maximum cutting diameter is 550 mm (21.7 in), cutting length 950 mm (37.4 in), and swing over the bed 750 mm (29.5 in).
Tooling is larger as well. OD tools are 32 mm (1.26 in) and boring bars 50 mm (1.97 in), on a 12-station turret that indexes in 0.5 s. X travel is 285 + 25 mm (11.2 + 1 in), Z travel 975 mm (38.4 in). The X axis rapids at 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) and Z at 36 m/min (1,417 ipm).
The tailstock has 975 mm (38.4 in) of travel and an MT5 quill with a 100 mm (3.9 in) stroke. Weight is listed as 6,700 kg (14,771 lb), dimensions as 3,900 x 2,165 mm (154 x 85 in), and the power requirement as 35 kVA.
