Overview
Roll turning is the natural work of the Johnford ST-200C: 5,050 mm (198.8 in) of Z travel, a 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck and a tailstock that travels 4,600 mm (181.1 in).
A roll is held at one journal in the chuck and at the other on a center, and for that the tailstock is as important as the spindle. Here the quill is Ø200 mm (7.9 in) with an MT#7 taper and 150 mm (5.9 in) of travel, and the tailstock is programmable and hydraulic, so its position and thrust are set from the control. For long barrels, manual or hydraulic self-centering steady rests can be added.
The spindle is the A2-15 C unit with a 200 mm (7.9 in) bearing diameter. It turns at up to 1,500 rpm with the belt-type gearbox and 1,200 rpm with the geared headstock, driven by 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) or optionally 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp).
