Overview

The Thielenhaus BearingStar 90 finishes the raceways of ball and roller bearing rings with outer ring outside diameters of 26 – 90 mm (1.0 – 3.5 in) and inner ring inside diameters of 10 – 50 mm (0.39 – 2.0 in). Ring width is 8 – 35 mm (0.31 – 1.4 in). It is a fully automatic Microfinish machine, built with 1 or 2 machining stations.

The station count decides the process. A 1-station machine does 1-step machining. A 2-station machine can run 1- or 2-step machining as desired, which puts pre-finishing and final finishing on separate stones. Outer or inner rings run in one machine, and Thielenhaus states P2 raceway quality.

This is the mechanical member of its size class. In the standard build the radial or linear oscillation unit is mechanical, with manual adjustment of oscillation, oscillation angle and stroke, and the raceway position is adjusted mechanically. A direct drive oscillation unit with automatic adjustment and NC setting of the X-Z axis position of the raceways are both listed as optional. HyperFinish technology is marked as not available.

Thielenhaus prints a direct comparison with the KM 90 evo, which covers the same ring diameters. The BearingStar 90 runs its workpiece spindle to 6,000 rpm and loads and unloads in 1.8 s; the KM 90 evo reaches 10,000 rpm and 1.0 s. Stone contact pressure here is 0 – 170 N, the oscillation angle ±0 – 18° and the linear stroke 0 – 6 mm (0 – 0.24 in). A shop that rarely changes ring type gives up little with manual adjustment. Frequent changeovers are the argument for the NC options or for the evo.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Covers outer rings of 26 – 90 mm outside diameter and inner rings of 10 – 50 mm inside diameter in one machine
  • Available with 1 or 2 machining stations, for 1-step or 2-step machining
  • P2 raceway quality stated by Thielenhaus
  • Radial or linear oscillation, with an oscillation angle of ±0 – 18° and a linear stroke of 0 – 6 mm
  • Direct drive oscillation with automatic adjustment and NC raceway positioning can be added as options

Limitations

  • Standard oscillation unit is mechanical, with manual adjustment of oscillation, angle and stroke
  • Loading and unloading takes 1.8 s, against 1.0 s on the KM 90 evo
  • HyperFinish technology is listed as not available; on the KM 90 evo it is an option
  • Workpiece spindle speed tops out at 6,000 rpm, where the KM 90 evo runs to 10,000 rpm
  • Microfinish of ball and roller bearing raceways in just one machine is marked no in the maker's comparison

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the BearingStar 90 and the KM 90 evo?

Both take outer rings of 26 – 90 mm outside diameter. The BearingStar 90 has a mechanical oscillation unit with manual adjustment as standard, runs to 6,000 rpm and loads and unloads in 1.8 s. The KM 90 evo has a direct drive oscillation unit with automatic adjustment, NC setting of the raceway position, 10,000 rpm and 1.0 s for loading and unloading.

02 Can the BearingStar 90 machine both inner and outer rings?

Yes. Thielenhaus lists outer or inner rings in one machine. The outer ring outside diameter range is 26 – 90 mm (1.0 – 3.5 in), the inner ring inside diameter range 10 – 50 mm (0.39 – 2.0 in), and ring width 8 – 35 mm (0.31 – 1.4 in).

03 Which bearing types is it listed for?

1- or 2-row radial ball bearings, axial ball bearings, 1- or 2-row angular ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings and tapered roller bearings. The maker's comparison marks Microfinish of ball and roller bearing raceways in just one machine as no for this model, so check how a mixed programme would be tooled.

04 Is the raceway position set by NC?

Not as standard. The machining solutions list mechanical adjustment of the raceway position, and the comparison table shows NC setting of the X-Z axis position of the raceways as yes (optional). The direct drive oscillation unit with automatic adjustment is optional in the same way.
