Overview
The Amada TECHSTER 64 is a medium-duty CNC precision surface grinder positioned as a non-hydraulic ECO model that uses ball screw-driven table systems instead of traditional hydraulic reciprocation. This eliminates hydraulic fluid, associated maintenance, and heat generation while providing accurate table motion at variable speeds.
The TECHSTER 64 features simultaneous 2-axis plus 1-axis NC control with a 600 x 400 mm maximum chuck size. Axis travels span 780 mm (traverse), 450 mm (cross), and 500 mm (vertical). The 3.7 kW wheel spindle drives grinding wheels up to 355 x 38-50 x 127 mm -- the same wheel capacity as the larger TECHSTER 84 and 104.
The ball screw drive with direct drive on all axes allows programming any traverse speed within the machine’s range, optimizing grinding parameters for different materials. Unlike hydraulic drives at fixed reciprocation speeds, the ball screw system provides full variable-speed capability.
Available in standard and 64S variants. New systems typically price between $100,000 and $170,000, the most accessible in the TECHSTER lineup.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Non-hydraulic ECO design eliminates hydraulic fluid, maintenance, and heat generation
- Ball screw table provides variable-speed reciprocation unlike fixed-speed hydraulic systems
- Same 355 mm wheel capacity as larger TECHSTER 84/104
- Most accessible price point in the TECHSTER lineup
- 3.7 kW spindle adequate for precision surface grinding on hardened steels
- 500 mm vertical travel is the most generous in the TECHSTER series
Limitations
- Smaller 600 x 400 mm table vs TECHSTER 84 (800 x 400 mm)
- Lower spindle power (3.7 kW vs 7.5 kW) means slower heavy roughing
- Medium-duty precision not suitable for ultra-precision work
- No published spindle speed specifications

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Ball screw-driven table instead of hydraulic systems. Eliminates hydraulic fluid, reduces maintenance, prevents heat buildup.
02
Smaller table (600 x 400 mm vs 800 x 400 mm), lower power (3.7 kW vs 7.5 kW), shorter traverse (780 vs 1,000 mm). Non-hydraulic ECO design. Costs $100K-$170K vs $120K-$200K.
03
Both available. The S designation typically indicates specification differences or enhancements, though detailed comparisons are not publicly available.
04
Designed for precision tool room work rather than high-volume production. CNC control provides consistent results, but throughput-focused work may need larger machines.
