Overview

The Palmary VIG-2015 is the smallest CNC vertical grinder Palmary makes. The part sits on a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) chuck with its axis vertical and is ground from above by a built-in internal wheel spindle. Workpieces may be up to 150 mm (5.9 in) long, swing Ø300 mm (11.8 in) and weigh 100 kg (220 lb).

Palmary's case for the vertical layout is short. With the part standing on the chuck there is no vibration or run-out from the weight of workpiece and chuck, irregular shapes are easy to chuck, and parts whose bore is not symmetric with their outside can be ground on bore and end face.

The internal grinding range is Ø14 to 200 mm, with a note that bore length should stay within three times its diameter. Wheels of Ø10 to 65 mm run at 10,000 to 45,000 rpm for a wheel speed of 45 m/s (8,858 ft/min). The spindle motor is 3.0 kW, and the table gives its torque as 1.1 Nm at S1. The work spindle is stronger, 3.5 kW (4.7 hp), at 40 to 800 rpm.

X travels 500 mm (19.7 in) and Z 400 mm (15.7 in) on linear guideways, at feeds up to 6 m/min, with fully closed loop scales on both. The base is a honeycomb tubular design. A FANUC CNC controller with a current-based gap control function is standard, operated through Palmary's own graphic dialogue screen. The machine weighs 5,500 kg (12,125 lb) and draws 32 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Vertical layout: no run-out from the weight of workpiece and chuck, according to Palmary
  • Internal grinding range of Ø14 to 200 mm with a 10,000 to 45,000 rpm built-in spindle
  • Fully closed loop digital scales on X and Z as standard
  • FANUC CNC controller with gap control function included
  • 3.5 kW (4.7 hp) work spindle for parts up to 100 kg (220 lb)

Limitations

  • Workpiece length and grinding length limited to 150 mm (5.9 in)
  • Wheel spindle motor torque of 1.1 Nm at S1 restricts stock removal
  • No automatic wheel change, unlike the larger VIG-50
  • Needs compressed air at 0.7 MPa as well as 32 kVA of electrical supply

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the Palmary VIG-2015 grind?

Bores from Ø14 to 200 mm and outside diameters up to Ø200 mm (7.9 in), on parts up to 150 mm (5.9 in) long standing on a Ø200 mm (7.9 in) chuck. Palmary notes that end faces and parts with a bore that is not symmetric to the outside shape can also be ground.

02 Why choose a vertical grinder like the VIG-2015?

Palmary gives three reasons: no vibration or run-out caused by the self-weight of workpiece and chuck, the ability to grind non-symmetric parts on bore and end face, and easy chucking of irregularly shaped workpieces.

03 What are the travels and feeds of the VIG-2015?

X axis traverse 500 mm (19.7 in) and Z axis traverse 400 mm (15.7 in), each at 0 to 6 m/min with a 0.001 mm minimum setting unit. The slide ways are linear guideways, and the handwheel moves 0.001, 0.01 or 0.1 mm per graduation.

04 What control options does the VIG-2015 have?

A FANUC CNC controller including a current gap control function is standard. Palmary lists a Mitsubishi CNC controller as an optional accessory. The operating screens are a graphic dialogue interface that Palmary says it developed itself.
