Overview

The Johnford ST-130D is slow by design. Its D spindle turns at no more than 1,000 rpm, and on a bed with 3,050 mm (120.1 in) of Z travel that speed fits the heavy, large-diameter parts the machine is meant for.

Consider what the spindle is. The bearing diameter is 240 mm (9.4 in), the largest in the standard ST table. The bore is 185 mm (7.3 in). The nose is A2-15 and carries a 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck, or a 610 mm (24 in) one. A spindle of those proportions is made to hold weight and take torque, and four automatic speeds let the 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) motor deliver its power at low rpm.

For still heavier cutting the 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) motor and the geared headstock are the listed upgrades. The geared version has a 176 mm (6.9 in) bore.

The ST-130C on the same bed reaches 1,500 rpm and suits mixed work better. Take the D where bar capacity of 165 mm (6.5 in) or bearing size decides. Tailstock travel is 2,750 mm (108.3 in), machine weight 20,500 kg (45,100 lb) and length 8,612 mm (339.1 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is 1,000 rpm enough on the ST-130D?

For the large diameters this spindle is built for, yes. For small diameters it limits surface speed. The ST-130C on the same bed runs to 1,500 rpm and the ST-130B to 2,000 rpm.

02 What bearing and bore does the ST-130D spindle have?

A 240 mm (9.4 in) bearing diameter and a 185 mm (7.3 in) bore, or 176 mm (6.9 in) with the geared headstock. Bar capacity is 165 mm (6.5 in) and the nose is A2-15.

03 How much does the ST-130D weigh?

20,500 kg (45,100 lb). Outside dimensions are 8,612 x 2,504 x 2,895 mm (339.1 x 98.6 x 114 in), and the tailstock travels 2,750 mm (108.3 in).

04 Which options add milling to the ST-130D?

A 0.001° C axis for the main spindle, a 12-position live tool turret in VDI or BMT and Y-axis capability, with ±75 mm (±3 in) of travel. A B-axis milling/turning spindle for simultaneous 4 or 5 axis machining is also on the optional list.
