Price estimate
We do not have a price for the SW BA one8 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The SW BA one8 is the larger of SW's two single-spindle precision machines. Its work space measures 800 mm (31.5 in) in X, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) in Y and 650 mm (25.6 in) in Z, and the axes are driven by linear motors.
Y is the long axis. That is rare, and it tells you about the parts: SW names engine blocks, cylinder heads and strut mountings. An engine block stood on end in a rotary fixture needs height more than width, and 1,000 mm of Y gives the spindle access along its full length.
Three interfaces are listed. HSK-A63 comes with a 1-17,500 rpm range, 35 kW and 80 Nm. HSK-A80 and HSK-A100 both come with 1-12,500 rpm, 42 kW and 200 Nm. The choice between the last two is about tool stiffness and tool weight, since the motor rating is the same.
The 4th-axis interference circle is Ø 965 x 1,030 mm. SW's feature list repeats the claim made for the smaller model, for highest precision machining requirements, and lists loading and unloading in parallel to machining time. Flexible automation solutions, a line on most SW pages, is missing from this one. Ask how the machine is to be loaded if it has to sit in an automated line.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of Y travel with 800 mm (31.5 in) of X and 650 mm (25.6 in) of Z
- Ø 965 x 1,030 mm interference circle on the 4th axis
- HSK-A63, HSK-A80 or HSK-A100 spindle, up to 42 kW and 200 Nm
- Linear drive technology on a machine SW positions for highest precision requirements
Limitations
- Single spindle: one part per cycle
- 200 Nm is the highest torque listed, even with HSK-A100
- SW's feature list for this model does not mention flexible automation solutions
- No accuracy figure, magazine capacity or weight in the table
