Makino a92

The Makino a92 is a large-envelope horizontal machining center designed for high-performance production of oversized prismatic components. Positioned above the a81nx in Makino's HMC lineup, the a92 targets applications where both work envelope and material removal rates are critical — large aerospace structural parts, heavy equipment housings, and industrial machinery components that demand simultaneous size and precision.

Axis travel extends to 1,300 x 1,100 x 1,100 mm (51.2 x 43.3 x 43.3 in) on X/Y/Z, providing the work envelope needed for parts that exceed the capabilities of standard 800mm-class machines. The 1,000 x 1,000 mm (39.4 x 39.4 in) pallet supports workpieces up to 1,600 mm (63 in) diameter with a 2,500 kg (5,512 lb) load capacity, accommodating the heavy fixtures and large castings typical of this machine class.

The standard spindle runs at 10,000 RPM with an HSK-A100 taper delivering 45 kW (60.3 hp) continuous power and 800 Nm of torque. This provides the cutting force needed for aggressive roughing with large-diameter face mills and boring bars in cast iron and steel. An optional high-speed spindle is available for shops that split production between ferrous and aluminum work.

Makino's signature technologies carry through to the a92: cross-roller guides on all linear axes for superior rigidity, direct-drive B-axis for backlash-free indexing, and the Thermal Stabilizer package for long-term dimensional stability. The machine's substantial mass of approximately 35,000 kg (77,162 lb) provides the dynamic rigidity needed to maintain accuracy during heavy interrupted cuts.

The a92 runs on Makino's Professional 6 control and integrates with the MMC2 automation system for multi-pallet production cells. The 80-tool standard ATC handles complex production jobs, with expansion options for extended unattended operation. The a92 competes directly with the Mazak HCN-10800, DMG Mori NHX 10000, and Okuma MB-10000H in the large HMC segment.
