Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer TC-40H that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fryer TC-40H is a horizontal traveling column machining center with 40 in (1,016 mm) of X travel: a horizontal CAT 40 spindle on a column that moves along a fixed 40 x 24 in (1,016 x 610 mm) table. It is the shortest of six TC-H lengths, and at 30,000 lb (13,608 kg) it weighs half as much again as its vertical counterpart, the TC-40V.
Fryer shows this model on its series page working on an I-beam and on pipe, which says a good deal about its purpose. A horizontal spindle approaches a part from the side. Structural sections, tube and pipe can lie on the fixed table, clamped along their length, while the spindle drills, mills copes and cuts openings in the web or wall. Chips fall clear of the cut instead of collecting in it.
The table is rated 8,000 lb (3,629 kg). Since it never moves, long stock can extend past both ends on stands, and the 40 in stroke then becomes the working window on a much longer piece. Y travel is 24 in (610 mm), with an extended 36" Y travel on the options sheet for all TC-H lengths; Z is 24 in (610 mm).
Spindle power is 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak with 155 ft-lb (210 Nm), at 60 - 8,500 rpm. A 24 station arm type changer is standard, and Fryer quotes 800 ft-lb (1,085 Nm) with the optional gearbox. Rapids are 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) and the X axis is ballscrew driven.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Horizontal spindle on a traveling column, with a fixed table rated 8,000 lb (3,629 kg)
- Long stock can overhang the 40 x 24 in (1,016 x 610 mm) table at both ends
- 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak, 155 ft-lb (210 Nm) spindle with a gearbox option
- Extended 36" Y travel is listed for this length
- 30,000 lb (13,608 kg) of machine behind a 40 in (1,016 mm) stroke
Limitations
- X travel is only 40 in (1,016 mm) on a 160 in (4,064 mm) wide machine
- The extended 32" Z travel is listed for the TC-80H and longer, not for this model
- Base spindle is 40 taper; 50 taper is an option
- Cutting feed rate is limited to 600 ipm (15.2 m/min)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
It is a horizontal spindle machine with a fixed table and traveling column. Fryer's series page shows the TC-40H machining an I-beam and pipe. The side approach of the spindle suits structural sections, tube and other parts that are clamped along their length on the 8,000 lb (3,629 kg) table.
02
Spindle orientation and weight. The TC-40V has a vertical spindle and weighs 20,000 lb (9,072 kg); the TC-40H has a horizontal spindle and weighs 30,000 lb (13,608 kg). Both have 40 in (1,016 mm) of X, a fixed 40 x 24 in (1,016 x 610 mm) table and 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) rapids.
03
Fryer's table gives spindle nose to table center as 10 - 28 in (254 - 711 mm), with 10 - 26 in in brackets, and a second row of 28 - 4 in (711 - 102 mm) with 40 - 4 in in brackets. The table top is 38 in (965 mm) above the floor.
04
A 24 station arm type changer with a 3.0 seconds tool change and 4.0 seconds chip to chip; a 40 tool changer is optional. Fryer offers the series with a Siemens or Fanuc CNC and simple menu or G code programming.
