Overview

The ShopSabre PRO EVA 408 is a ball screw 4x8 router fitted from the factory with a tangential oscillating knife for EVA foam and SeaDek marine decking. Its cut area is 60 x 100 x 12 in (1,524 x 2,540 x 305 mm), and it is the mid-level machine in ShopSabre's EVA line.

The knife is the centre of the package. A tangential knife is steered by its own axis so the blade always faces the direction of travel, and the oscillating stroke lets it slice through thick, soft foam instead of dragging and tearing it. ShopSabre supplies it in an EVA-specific configuration. Sharp inside corners and small lettering in decking pads are where this shows against a passive drag knife such as the one on the RC8 EVA.

Routing still matters for decking, because the brushed grooves and two-colour reveals are milled, not cut. Here the PRO base helps. Ball screws on X, dual Y and Z with AC servo motors give +/- 0.001 in (0.025 mm) repeatability, so the depth of a groove that exposes the lower colour layer stays even across a long pad. Rapid speed is 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min).

The Well Equipped list also contains a 5 hp / 6 hp tool-change spindle with 6 positions, a phenolic vacuum-ready top with 4 zones, pop-up pins and a single-phase ShopSabre F4 vacuum system. ShopSabre warns that a tangential knife may reduce the working area, so ask for the usable knife envelope before committing to sheet sizes. The machine is 80 x 133 x 93 in (2,032 x 3,378 x 2,362 mm).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Tangential oscillating knife system in a ShopSabre EVA foam configuration
  • Ball screws on X, dual Y and Z with +/- 0.001 in (0.025 mm) repeatability for even groove depth
  • Single-phase F4 vacuum system included in the Well Equipped list
  • 6-position tool changer on a 5 hp / 6 hp electric fan-cooled spindle
  • 60 x 100 in (1,524 x 2,540 mm) table also handles 5x5 material

Limitations

  • The tangential knife may reduce the working area, by an amount ShopSabre does not state
  • Rapid speed of 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min), below the 2,100 ipm of the IS EVA 408
  • The packaged vacuum source is the F4 system, not the Becker VTLF pump listed with the IS EVA 408
  • Knife stroke, blade sizes and maximum foam thickness are not given on the page

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What knife is on the ShopSabre PRO EVA 408?

A tangential oscillating knife system with a ShopSabre-specific EVA foam configuration. ShopSabre describes it as an industrial knife head with integrated tool and knife measurement. Stroke and blade data are not published, so request them if you cut unusually thick or dense foam.

02 How does the PRO EVA 408 differ from the PRO 408?

The frame, drives and 60 x 100 x 12 in cut area are the same as the PRO 408. The EVA version adds the tangential oscillating knife and a single-phase F4 vacuum system to the Well Equipped list, and is set up for foam decking work.

03 Is the PRO EVA 408 only for foam?

No. It keeps the spindle, tool changer and Vectric VCarve PRO software of the PRO Series, and ShopSabre lists nested sheet work, MDF doors and custom machining among its uses. Fitting a knife may take away some working area, which is the trade for having both tools on the head.

04 What vacuum system does the PRO EVA 408 include?

The Well Equipped list names a single-phase ShopSabre F4 vacuum system and a surfaced phenolic hi-flow vacuum-ready tabletop with 4 independently controlled zones. FPZ and Becker pumps appear among the options for shops that want more capacity.
