ShopSabre PRO 404 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the ShopSabre PRO 404 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from ShopSabre or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The ShopSabre PRO 404 packs the PRO Series drive train into a nearly square machine: ball screws on X, dual Y and Z, AC servo motors, and a 60 x 50 x 12 in (1,524 x 1,270 x 305 mm) cut area in a footprint of 80 x 85 x 93 in (2,032 x 2,159 x 2,362 mm). It is the short-table choice for shops that want servo and ball screw accuracy but do not process full sheets.

Positional repeatability is +/- 0.001 in (0.025 mm), and rapid speed is 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min). On a table with only 50 in of long-axis travel the rapid rate hardly matters, because the gantry never gets far enough to reach it for long. What the buyer is getting is stiffness and repeatability for parts that are machined, not just profiled: aluminum plates, solid-surface pieces, instrument bodies, fixtures and moulds.

The Z axis suits that work. Travel is 16 in (406 mm) with 12 in (305 mm) of standard clearance under the gantry, far more than sheet goods need, so thick blocks, vises and an on-table rotary axis all have room.

In the Well Equipped configuration ShopSabre lists a 5 hp / 6 hp electric fan-cooled tool-change spindle with 6 tool positions, ISO30 holders and ER32 collets, plus a phenolic vacuum-ready tabletop with 4 independently controlled zones and pop-up reference pins. Manual-change HSD spindles of 4 hp or 9.3 hp are listed as alternatives, and a full aluminum T-slot tabletop is an option that fits the clamped, non-sheet work this size attracts. The spindle is offered for single-phase or three-phase supply.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ball screw drive on X, dual Y and Z with AC servo motors, in an 80 x 85 in (2,032 x 2,159 mm) floor area
  • +/- 0.001 in (0.025 mm) positional repeatability
  • 16 in (406 mm) of Z travel and 12 in (305 mm) of standard gantry clearance
  • 60 in (1,524 mm) of cutting width, the same as the PRO 408
  • Full aluminum T-slot tabletop available for clamped work

Limitations

  • The 50 in (1,270 mm) long axis rules out full 4x8 sheets
  • At 93 in (2,362 mm) tall the machine needs more headroom than its floor area suggests
  • Rapid speed is 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min), below the 2,100 ipm of the IS 408
  • No weight, power draw or spindle speed is given in ShopSabre's table for this model

Best For

Aluminum and brass plate work held on T-slots or vacuum pods Solid-surface and plastic parts up to 60 x 50 in Instrument making and mould or pattern work using the 16 in Z travel R&D and prototype shops without room for an 8 ft table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the working area of the ShopSabre PRO 404?

The cut area is 60 x 50 x 12 in (1,524 x 1,270 x 305 mm). Z travel is 16 in (406 mm) and the standard gantry clearance is 12 in (305 mm). The machine occupies 80 x 85 x 93 in (2,032 x 2,159 x 2,362 mm).

02 Why choose a PRO 404 over an RC4?

The RC4 is rack-and-pinion driven on X and Y with +/- 0.002 in repeatability and 9 in of Z travel in a 51 x 49 in cut area. The PRO 404 uses ball screws on every axis with AC servo motors, lists +/- 0.001 in repeatability, and has 16 in of Z travel over a 60 x 50 in area.

03 Does the PRO 404 have an automatic tool changer?

The Well Equipped package includes one: a 5 hp / 6 hp electric fan-cooled tool-change spindle with 6 tool positions, 6 ISO30 tool holders and ER32 collets. ShopSabre also lists the spindle with or without the tool changer option, and manual-change HSD spindles in 4 hp or 9.3 hp.

04 Can the PRO 404 run on single-phase power?

ShopSabre lists the electric fan-cooled spindle as available for single-phase or three-phase operation, and the Well Equipped package includes a VFD for either. The page gives no amperage for the PRO Series, so get the electrical requirement for your chosen spindle in writing before wiring the shop.
