Overview

The ShopSabre PRO 408 is a 4x8 nesting router with ball screws on every axis. Its cut area is 60 x 100 x 12 in (1,524 x 2,540 x 305 mm), wider and longer than the sheet it is named for, and ShopSabre points out that the extra width lets the machine process 5x5 material as well.

ShopSabre builds the PRO around three things the entry series lacks. The X, twin-screw Y and Z axes are all ball screw driven. The motors are digital AC closed-loop servos with glass encoders. And the frame is a stress-relieved, aerospace-milled steel weldment. The result on paper is +/- 0.001 in (0.025 mm) positional repeatability at a 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) rapid speed.

For cabinet and closet work the Well Equipped package is close to a complete nesting cell. It lists a phenolic hi-flow tabletop with 4 independently controlled vacuum zones, pop-up reference pins for squaring the sheet, and a 5 hp / 6 hp tool-change spindle with 6 positions on ISO30 holders. Six tools is enough for a compression bit, a dado tool, a drill or two and a profile cutter, but a shop that runs MDF doors with several profile bits will want the 12-position changer from the options list. The vacuum pump is chosen separately.

The machine measures 80 x 133 x 93 in (2,032 x 3,378 x 2,362 mm), with 16 in (406 mm) of Z travel under a 12 in (305 mm) gantry. It ships assembled, and the operator works from a separate control tower with its own PC.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 60 x 100 in (1,524 x 2,540 mm) cutting area handles 4x8 sheet and 5x5 material
  • Twin ball screws on the long Y axis, with ball screws on X and Z as well
  • Phenolic vacuum-ready tabletop with 4 independently controlled zones in the Well Equipped package
  • Pop-up table reference pins for sheet alignment are part of that package
  • +/- 0.001 in (0.025 mm) repeatability from AC servo motors with glass encoders

Limitations

  • The packaged tool changer has 6 positions; 12 positions is an option
  • 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) rapid speed, where the IS 408 lists 2,100 ipm
  • A vacuum pump is not part of the Well Equipped list for the PRO Series
  • 93 in (2,362 mm) overall height needs checking against doors and ceilings

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why is the PRO 408 cut area bigger than a 4x8 sheet?

ShopSabre oversizes the working area. The PRO 408 cuts 60 x 100 x 12 in (1,524 x 2,540 x 305 mm), which gives margin for edge trimming and clamps around a 4x8 sheet and, as ShopSabre notes, allows 5x5 processing on the same table.

02 What tool changer comes on the PRO 408?

The Well Equipped package lists a 5 hp / 6 hp electric fan-cooled tool-change spindle with 6 tool positions, 6 ISO30 tool holders and ER32 collets. The options list has tool changer systems with 6 or 12 positions and HSD spindles in 5 hp ISO or 10 hp ISO.

03 How does the PRO 408 compare with the IS 408?

Both are ball screw, AC servo machines with +/- 0.001 in repeatability and 16 in of Z travel. The IS 408 is faster at 2,100 ipm against 1,200 ipm, has a 65 x 100 x 12 in cut area, and its Well Equipped package lists a 10 hp / 12 hp spindle with 12 tool positions.

04 Does the PRO 408 need assembly on delivery?

ShopSabre states that the machine ships fully assembled with no installation assistance required. The footprint is 80 x 133 x 93 in (2,032 x 3,378 x 2,362 mm), so the route into the building has to pass a machine of that size in one piece.
