CMS Ethos — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the CMS Ethos that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from CMS or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The CMS Ethos is a high speed 5-axis gantry machining center built to order in a long list of sizes. CMS prints eleven X strokes, starting at 2500 and ending at 20500 mm, which puts it among the machines used for aircraft skins, vehicle bodies and long composite tools.

Cross travel and height are sold as pairs. The table lists Y/Z combinations of 2600/1300 - 2600/2000 - 4000/1300 - 4000/2000 mm, so either bridge width can be had with a Z of 1,300 mm (51.2 in) or 2,000 mm (78.7 in). The A axis has ±110°, and the C row reads ±300° / ±361°.

Seven working units are listed in three mechanical styles. KX5 and TORQUE 5 are compact mono-arm heads; FX5 is a fork head. Each style comes with an 18 kW (S1) spindle giving 14.5 Nm (S1) on HSK 63 E, or a 32 kW (S1) spindle giving 68 Nm (S1) on HSK 63 A, all at 24,000 rpm. The fork head adds a 31.4 kW (S1) unit at 15,000 rpm with 100 Nm (S1), the choice for harder cutting at lower speed. CMS explains that the torque-motor unit couples the motors directly to the rotating axes, removing the transmission components.

Around the gantry CMS offers APC extractable tables, a rotary table for pendulum cycles, a double bridge with twin operating units and a hybrid version that combines milling with a waterjet cutting system and catcher. An automatic universal holding system, UHF, reconfigures itself to hold complex shaped parts. CMS states frame rigidity up to 23% higher than the average in its category.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X strokes up to 20500 mm for very long parts
  • Seven working units, in mono-arm and fork styles, from 18 kW (S1) to 32 kW (S1)
  • Torque-motor head with direct coupling to the rotating axes
  • Fork unit with 100 Nm (S1) at 15,000 rpm for heavier cuts
  • Options include APC extractable tables, double bridge and a milling plus waterjet hybrid

Limitations

  • A axis is limited to ±110°
  • No rapid traverse, acceleration or accuracy figures are listed for the linear axes
  • Tool magazine capacity is not published; the table only states that tool change is automatic
  • Every machine is configured to order, so the listed strokes are a menu and not one specification
06

Best For

Aerospace and automotive composite parts and tooling Long workpieces that need X strokes of 10000 mm and more Trimming and milling combined with waterjet cutting in the hybrid version

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What sizes does the CMS Ethos come in?

CMS lists X strokes of 2500 - 4000 - 5000 - 6000 - 7500 - 8000 - 10000 - 13000 - 15500 - 18000 - 20500 mm. Y and Z are offered as the pairs 2600/1300 - 2600/2000 - 4000/1300 - 4000/2000 mm.

02 Which spindles are available?

Seven working units. The KX5, TORQUE 5 and FX5 styles each come as an 18 kW (S1), 22.5 kW max (S6) unit on HSK 63 E or a 32 kW (S1) unit on HSK 63 A, at 24,000 rpm. The FX5 fork head also comes with 31.4 kW (S1) and 100 Nm (S1) at 15,000 rpm. All are liquid cooled.

03 What is the UHF system?

CMS describes UHF as a fully automatic universal system for holding complex shaped parts, designed and produced by CMS. It is offered as an option alongside APC extractable tables and a rotary table.

04 Can the Ethos combine milling and waterjet cutting?

Yes. CMS lists a 5-axis hybrid solution that combines milling with a waterjet cutting system with catcher. A double bridge with twin operating units is also available.
