Overview

Length is what the Komo Mach III GT sells. It is the moving gantry member of the Mach III family, with a base table 300 in long and a build length available up to 110 ft (33,000 mm) in 60 in (1,524 mm) intervals.

A moving table cannot grow like that, since the table needs its own length again to travel. Here the workpiece lies still and the gantry runs along it. Four widths are listed: the 525 at 60 in x 300 in (1,524 mm x 7,620 mm), the 625 at 72 in x 300 in (1,829 mm x 7,620 mm), the 825 at 96 in x 300 in (2,438 mm x 7,620 mm) and the 1025 at 120 in x 300 in (3,048 mm x 7,620 mm). X travel is 324 in (8,230 mm) on all four. Y travel is listed as 84 in (2,134 mm) for the 525 and 625 and 164 in (4,165 mm) for the 825 and 1025, and Z as 15 in (381 mm).

Moving a long gantry costs some speed. X traverse is 2,000 ipm (50.8 m/min), against 3,150 ipm (80 m/min) in Y, and acceleration is 83 in/sec². On a bed this long the practical gain comes from elsewhere: several parts or sheets set up end to end, with loading at one end while the gantry works at the other.

The head is the Mach III arrangement, an 18 hp (13.2 kW) fan-cooled HSK 63F spindle with a 15-tool aggregate-capable changer and a precision machined aluminum table (2 in). Komo says the machine can be configured with multiple spindles, moulder heads and horizontal spindles, and the option list adds boring blocks, a C axis and part labeling.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Table length of 300 in as listed, available up to 110 ft (33,000 mm) in 60 in (1,524 mm) intervals
  • Four table widths from 60 in on the 525 to 120 in on the 1025
  • X travel of 324 in (8,230 mm) with 15 in (381 mm) of Z
  • Configurable with multiple spindles, moulder heads and horizontal spindles
  • Precision machined aluminum table (2 in) and a spindle-mounted 15-tool changer

Limitations

  • X traverse is 2,000 ipm (50.8 m/min), slower than the 3,150 ipm (80 m/min) of the moving table Mach III
  • The tool changer row lists 15 tools with no expansion figure
  • A bed of 300 in or more needs a long building bay and matching dust and vacuum runs
  • Acceleration is 83 in/sec²

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long can a Mach III GT be built?

The four listed tables are 300 in long, and Komo states that length is available up to 110 ft (33,000 mm) in 60 in (1,524 mm) intervals. The introduction to the model gives the same limit for the X axis and 120 in (3,048 mm) as the largest table size in the Y axis.

02 What are the 525, 625, 825 and 1025?

They are the four table widths. The 525 is 60 in x 300 in (1,524 mm x 7,620 mm), the 625 is 72 in x 300 in (1,829 mm x 7,620 mm), the 825 is 96 in x 300 in (2,438 mm x 7,620 mm) and the 1025 is 120 in x 300 in (3,048 mm x 7,620 mm). All four travel 324 in (8,230 mm) in X and 15 in (381 mm) in Z.

03 How is the Mach III GT different from the Mach III?

The Mach III moves its table and stops at a 144 in long table. The Mach III GT keeps the work still under a moving gantry, which is what allows the long bed. The spindle, taper and Z travel are the same in both data blocks; X traverse on the Mach III GT is 2,000 ipm (50.8 m/min).

04 What spindle options are there?

One 18 hp (13.2 kW) four-pole, fan-cooled spindle is standard, with an HSK 63F taper and up to 24,000 rpm, and an additional Hiteco or HSD spindle is optional. Komo also mentions multiple spindles, moulder heads and horizontal spindles, with programmable head spacing and head locks among the options.
