Overview

The Seibu SuperMM80B is the largest wire EDM in Seibu's water-specification range, listed as an ultra-precision machine with an axis travel range of 800 × 600 × 230 mm (31.5 × 23.6 × 9.1 in). It takes a workpiece up to 1,000 × 800 × 150 mm (39.4 × 31.5 × 5.9 in) and 600 kg (1,323 lb). The next size down is the MM75UP, whose travel is 750 × 500 × 310 mm (29.5 × 19.7 × 12.2 in).

The shape of that envelope says what the machine is for. Workpiece height stops at 150 mm (5.9 in), half of what the MM75UP accepts at 300 mm (11.8 in), and the 600 kg limit is below the MM75UP's 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). This is a machine for wide, flat work such as large die plates, where long strokes in plan matter more than cutting height.

Taper cutting is rated ±10° at a work thickness of 150 mm, with ±45° at 40 mm (1.6 in) as an option. U-V travel is ±60 × ±60 mm (±2.4 × ±2.4 in). Standard wire is Φ0.2 mm and the listed range is Φ0.1 to Φ0.3 mm, so very fine wire is not part of this machine's brief.

It is the only model in Seibu's wire EDM tables with an automatic wire feeding row: AWF-4 is equipped as standard. The control is Smart NC, the power supply MPSC-20 and the filtration device MF1100BD. Seibu's cutting sample for this group of machines, a combination cut in 60 mm thick SKD11, lists Ra 0.25 µm and Rz 2.00 µm with a cutting time of 50 hours.

Plan the installation early. The machine measures 2,380 × 2,400 × 2,155 mm (93.7 × 94.5 × 84.8 in) and weighs 6,300 kg (13,889 lb), the heaviest figure in the range.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Longest strokes in Seibu's wire EDM tables: 800 × 600 × 230 mm (31.5 × 23.6 × 9.1 in)
  • Accepts plates up to 1,000 × 800 × 150 mm (39.4 × 31.5 × 5.9 in)
  • AWF-4 automatic wire feeding device is equipped as standard
  • ±10° taper across the whole 150 mm (5.9 in) work thickness, with ±45° at 40 mm (1.6 in) as an option
  • Same Smart NC control and MPSC-20 power supply as the smaller machines, so programs and operators carry over

Limitations

  • Workpiece height is limited to 150 mm (5.9 in); the MM75UP accepts 300 mm (11.8 in)
  • Workpiece weight is limited to 600 kg (1,323 lb), less than the 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) of the MM75UP
  • Wire range starts at Φ0.1 mm, so the finest wires listed for other Seibu models are not available here
  • At 6,300 kg (13,889 lb) and 2,380 × 2,400 × 2,155 mm (93.7 × 94.5 × 84.8 in), floor loading and access need checking

Best For

Large, flat die plates up to 1,000 × 800 mm in plan Plate work no taller than 150 mm (5.9 in) Long unattended cuts that depend on the standard AWF-4 wire feeder Shops that need 800 × 600 mm strokes in an ultra-precision class machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big a workpiece does the SuperMM80B take?

Seibu lists a maximum workpiece of 1,000 × 800 × 150 mm (39.4 × 31.5 × 5.9 in) and a maximum workpiece weight of 600 kg (1,323 lb). The axis travel range is 800 × 600 × 230 mm (31.5 × 23.6 × 9.1 in), so the largest plate cannot be cut edge to edge in one position.

02 Is automatic wire threading standard on the SuperMM80B?

Yes. The table for this model has a row for the automatic wire feeding device that reads AWF-4 equipped as standard. It is the only Seibu wire EDM table on the product page that carries this row, so ask Seibu what is fitted on the other models.

03 What taper angles can the SuperMM80B cut?

The standard rating is ±10° at a work thickness of 150 mm (5.9 in), which is the full workpiece height the machine accepts. Seibu lists ±45° at 40 mm (1.6 in) as an option. U-V axis travel is ±60 × ±60 mm (±2.4 × ±2.4 in).

04 What wire sizes does the SuperMM80B run?

Φ0.2 mm is standard and the listed range is Φ0.1 to Φ0.3 mm. That range is narrower at the fine end than on the MM75UP, which starts at Φ0.05 mm, so work that depends on very small inside corner radii is better matched to the smaller ultra-precision models.

05 How does the SuperMM80B compare with the MM75UP?

The SuperMM80B has longer strokes in plan, 800 × 600 mm against 750 × 500 mm on the MM75UP, but less height: a 150 mm (5.9 in) workpiece against 300 mm (11.8 in). The MM75UP also carries more weight, 1,000 kg (2,205 lb), and weighs 5,600 kg (12,346 lb) itself.
