Overview
The GF AgieCharmilles CUT P 550 is the precision-focused wire EDM in the AgieCharmilles lineup, delivering sub-micron positioning accuracy and the best surface finish quality available from GF. The P designation stands for Performance, and this machine is built for shops where accuracy and finish quality matter more than raw cutting speed.
With 550 x 350 x 400 mm (21.7 x 13.8 x 15.7 in) of X/Y/Z travel, the CUT P 550 offers a substantially larger work envelope than the compact CUT S and CUT X machines. The extra travel is valuable for precision mold work where larger mold plates require the same sub-micron accuracy as smaller inserts.
The IPG generator on the CUT P 550 is the most advanced in the GF wire EDM range. It delivers surface finishes down to Ra 0.05 um (2 uin) in water dielectric, approaching mirror quality without oil. GF achieves this through proprietary spark strategies that minimize the recast layer and heat-affected zone during finishing passes. The generator also supports twin-wire technology, which uses different wire types for roughing and finishing in automated sequences.
Positioning accuracy is 1 um across the full travel range, maintained by high-resolution linear encoders, active thermal compensation, and a thermally stable mineral cast machine base. The mineral cast construction absorbs vibration better than cast iron, contributing to both accuracy and surface finish quality.
ICP collision protection is standard, along with the UNIQUA HMI. Wire compatibility spans 0.05 to 0.33 mm, with the 0.05 mm ultra-fine wire option enabling extremely fine detail work and corner radii below 0.1 mm. U/V travel is +/-75 mm for taper work up to +/-30 degrees.
New CUT P 550 machines price between $200,000 and $300,000. Used machines from 2016-2021 trade in the $100,000-$180,000 range.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Sub-micron (1 um) positioning accuracy is the tightest in the GF wire EDM range, enabling ultra-precision mold and die work
- Ra 0.05 um surface finish in water dielectric approaches mirror quality without the tradeoffs of oil-based machining
- Mineral cast machine base absorbs vibration better than cast iron, contributing to accuracy and finish quality
- 0.05 mm ultra-fine wire capability enables detail work and corner radii below 0.1 mm
- Twin-wire technology automates switching between roughing and finishing wire types
- 550 x 350 x 400 mm travel is substantially larger than the compact CUT S/CUT X platform
Limitations
- $200,000-$300,000 price point is a significant premium over the CUT S ($140K-$200K) for the accuracy upgrade
- Mineral cast base requires careful handling during installation since it is less impact-resistant than cast iron
- Ultra-fine 0.05 mm wire cuts very slowly and is fragile, limiting practical applications
- 6,500 kg machine weight requires proper floor preparation
- GF service network for the CUT P platform is more specialized than for the higher-volume CUT E and CUT S machines

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New CUT P 550 machines price between $200,000 and $300,000. Used machines from 2016-2021 trade in the $100,000-$180,000 range.
02
The CUT P prioritizes accuracy (1 um vs 2 um) and surface finish (Ra 0.05 um vs Ra 0.10 um). The CUT S prioritizes cutting speed. The CUT P also uses a mineral cast base and supports ultra-fine 0.05 mm wire.
03
Twin-wire automates switching between different wire types during a job. Typically a larger wire for fast roughing followed by a finer wire for precision finishing, all without operator intervention.
04
The CUT P 550 delivers up to 300 mm2/min, which is competitive with the CUT S at 250 mm2/min. The CUT P does not sacrifice speed for accuracy.
05
Mineral cast (polymer concrete) absorbs vibration 6-10 times better than cast iron and has superior thermal stability. This contributes directly to the CUT P sub-micron accuracy and surface finish quality.
