Overview
The Johnford VTC-4000ATC is where the VTC series turns into heavy vertical boring mill territory. Its Ø4,000 mm (Ø157.5 in) table carries 60,000 kg (132,000 lb), four times the load of the VTC-3000ATC, and it is driven by twin motors through twin pinions. Maximum swing is Ø5,000 mm (Ø196.9 in).
Twin pinions on the table's ring gear are the standard answer to two problems at this scale. They share the tooth load, and driven against each other they take up backlash, which matters for the optional C-axis. The drive is 45 / 55 kW (60.3 / 73.8 hp) as standard or 60 / 75 kW (80.5 / 100.6 hp) as an option, and the torque that results is 200,564 Nm (147,936 lb-ft) at a table speed of 1-60 rpm.
The tooling system is scaled up to match. Shanks are BT-50 as standard with BT-60 as an option. Tools may weigh 80 kg (176 lb), and the changer is rated for a total of 1,200 kg (2,640 lb). Square tool holders are □32 x □32, or □40 x □40 optionally.
