Overview

Romi builds the GL 300 on the same 600 mm (23.6 in) Z travel and the same swing figures as the GL 250, then fits a larger spindle and turret. The ROMI GL 300 turns 330 mm (13 in) in the T version and 300 mm (11.8 in) in the M, Y and S versions, with a built-in motor rated 25.2 hp / 18.5 kW.

The headstock choice is A2-6” or A2-8”. The first runs to 4,500 rpm with a 73 mm (2.9 in) bore and 51 or 64 mm (2 or 2.5 in) of bar capacity. The second gives up speed, 3,500 rpm, for an 85 mm (3.35 in) bore that passes 64 or 76 mm (2.5 or 3 in) bar and carries a 254 mm (10 in) chuck. For a shop whose bar stock runs past 64 mm, that A2-8” spindle is the reason to pick this size over the GL 250.

Tooling steps up too. The turret still has 12 stations but takes 25 x 25 mm (1” x 1”) square shanks and Ø 40 mm (1 1/2”) boring bars. The M version uses a VDI 40 disc with ER-32 collets, the Y version a BMT-55 disc. Driven tools turn at 0 ~ 4,000 rpm from a motor Romi rates at a minimum of 30 Nm (22.1 lb-ft), so the live tooling is geared to larger cutters than on the GL 250.

An S version exists, as on the GL 250, with the same A2-5” second headstock: 6,000 rpm, 51 mm (2 in) of bar capacity, 19.4 hp / 14.3 kW. Note that the second spindle is smaller than either main spindle, so the second operation is limited by its chuck. The tailstock of the other versions pushes with up to 500 kgf. The machine weighs 5,200 kg (11,464 lb) without chip conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • A2-8” headstock option with an 85 mm (3.35 in) bore and 64 or 76 mm (2.5 or 3 in) bar capacity
  • 25.2 hp / 18.5 kW built-in motor spindle
  • 12-station turret for 25 x 25 mm (1” x 1”) tools, with VDI 40 or BMT-55 driven-tool discs
  • X travel of 230 mm (9 in) on the M version
  • S version with second headstock for work on both ends of the part

Limitations

  • Z travel is 600 mm (23.6 in), no longer than on the smaller GL 250
  • The second headstock of S versions is an A2-5” unit with 51 mm (2 in) bar capacity, smaller than the main spindle
  • Driven tools stop at 4,000 rpm
  • S versions need 50 kVA of installed power, against 40 kVA for T, M and Y

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How is the ROMI GL 300 different from the GL 250?

The envelope is close: both have 600 mm (23.6 in) of Z travel. The GL 300 has a 25.2 hp / 18.5 kW spindle where the GL 250 has 19.4 hp / 14.3 kW, a larger headstock choice (A2-6” or A2-8”), a turret for 25 x 25 mm (1” x 1”) tools and 5,200 kg (11,464 lb) of weight.

02 What is the maximum turning diameter of the GL 300?

It is 330 mm (13 in) on the T version, which carries fixed tools only, and 300 mm (11.8 in) on the M, Y and S versions. Swing over the Z axis cover is 530 mm (20.8 in) and over the X table 420 mm (16.5 in).

03 Does the GL 300 have a Y axis?

The Y version does. Y travel is ± 50 mm (1.97 in) and the Y axis moves at 18 m/min (708 in/min) in rapid. The Y version uses a BMT-55 turret with ER-25 driven tool holders. On the S version the same Y turret works with the second headstock.

04 What tailstock does the GL 300 have?

On T, M and Y versions it is a servodriven tailstock on linear guides with an MT-4 taper and a maximum axial force of 500 kgf, positioned and loaded from the CNC. Its travel is 540 mm (21.2 in) and it moves at 10 m/min (393 in/min).
