ROMI C 830

The ROMI C 830 is a heavy flat-bed CNC lathe for long shafts: 850 mm (33 in) of swing over the bed, 3.0 / 5.0 m (118 / 197 in) between centers and a machine weight of 11,460 kg (25,265 lbs) in the shorter bed. Everything about it is sized for parts that are loaded with a crane.

Bed length is the first decision. The longer version gives 5,020 mm of carriage travel and weighs 14,960 kg (32,980 lbs), but its Z rapid is 5 m/min (197 in/min) where the 3.0 m bed moves at 8 m/min (315 in/min). On a long bed the saddle spends real time travelling, so that difference shows up in the cycle on parts with many tool changes.

Two geared headstocks share the 45 hp / 33.6 kW motor. The A2-11” version has a 160 mm (6.3 in) spindle hole, reaches 1,000 rpm and gives 5,510 Nm (4,063 lb-ft) in range I. The A2-15” version opens the hole to 260 mm (10.2 in), stops at 550 rpm and raises range I torque to 7,310 Nm (5,391 lb-ft). A 4-jaw independent rear chuck can be added to hold a long tube at both ends of the spindle.

Over the cross slide the C 830 swings 550 mm (22 in), and the slide travels 520 mm (20 in). The tailstock has a built-in MT-5 live center, a 130 mm (5.1 in) quill with 200 mm (7.9 in) of stroke, and is dragged along the bed through the table. Tooling ranges from a 4-station manual square holder for 40 x 40 mm (1.57 x 1.57 in) shanks to an 8-station VDI - 50 turret for driven tools at 3 to 3,000 rpm. Romi fits a Siemens Sinumerik 828D.
