Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Palmary OCD-4240 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Palmary OCD-4240 puts the largest swing of the standard OCD range, Ø420 mm (16.5 in), on its shortest bed, 400 mm (15.7 in) between centers. That makes it a grinder for discs, flanged hubs, short rolls and chucked parts up to Ø400 mm (15.7 in) rather than for shafts.
A short, large-diameter part is usually ground on a chuck or face plate, and the figures to watch are different from shaft work. The work spindle carries 35 kg (77 lb) including the holder, at a maximum length of 150 mm, when the tailstock is not used. Between centers the limit is 150 kg (331 lb). Palmary lists an adjustable 3-jaw scroll chuck and an adjustable 4-jaw chuck as options.
Mechanically it is an OCD-3240 with more room over the table. Wheel, wheelhead stroke of 260 mm (10.2 in), table stroke of 665 mm (26.2 in), 10 m/min (394 ipm) rapids and the 0° to 12° table swivel are all the same. So is the workhead servo motor at 1 kW (1.3 hp), which turns the part at 10 to 300 rpm; at Ø400 mm the low end of that range is what a large diameter needs.
The wheel is Ø405 mm on a 5.5 kW (7.4 hp) motor and runs in hybrid hydro-static bearings. The workhead swivels -30° to +90° for face and angle work. FANUC control, enclosed guarding and an X-axis linear scale are standard. Weight is 3,500 kg (7,716 lb).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Ø420 mm (16.5 in) swing and Ø400 mm (15.7 in) grinding diameter on a 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) machine
- Workhead swivels from -30° to +90° for face grinding of flanges and shoulders
- 0° to 12° table swivel, the same as the smaller-swing OCD-3240
- Work spindle speed starts at 10 rpm, which suits large diameters
- X-axis linear scale and FANUC CNC controller are standard accessories
Limitations
- Chucked parts are limited to 35 kg (77 lb) including the holder, at no more than 150 mm of length
- The 1 kW (1.3 hp) workhead motor is the smallest in the OCD-42 family
- Chucks are optional accessories; the base machine comes with carbide tipped work centers
- Only 400 mm (15.7 in) between centers

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Ø400 mm (15.7 in), under a swing over the table of Ø420 mm (16.5 in). The distance between centers is 400 mm (15.7 in). The same diameter capacity is available on longer beds as the OCD-4260 with 600 mm (23.6 in) between centers.
02
The table gives the maximum load of the work spindle as 35 kg (77 lb) with the tool holder included, at a maximum length of 150 mm. Supported by the tailstock, the load between centers is 150 kg (331 lb). The 3-jaw and 4-jaw chucks are optional accessories.
03
Swing and grinding diameter. The OCD-3240 swings Ø320 mm (12.6 in) and grinds to Ø300 mm (11.8 in) at 3,300 kg (7,275 lb). The OCD-4240 swings Ø420 mm (16.5 in) and grinds to Ø400 mm (15.7 in) at 3,500 kg (7,716 lb). Travels, wheel and motors are the same in both tables.
04
The table gives a 0.001 mm minimum setting unit on the X axis and a linear scale for X is a standard accessory. The tailstock has ±0.03 mm of fine adjustment for taper. Palmary states no positioning accuracy or roundness figure on the page, so ask for the inspection values.
