Overview
The Palmary OCD-4260 is a CNC cylindrical grinder with Ø420 mm (16.5 in) of swing and 600 mm (23.6 in) between centers, grinding up to Ø400 mm (15.7 in). Among the five OCD-42 lengths it is the second shortest, and the first where the workhead motor grows.
That motor is the detail to notice. The OCD-4240 turns the work with a 1 kW servo motor; from this model on the table lists 1.5 kW (2.0 hp). The speed range is unchanged at 10 to 300 rpm, so the extra power goes into turning larger and longer parts steadily, not into speed.
Elsewhere the numbers follow the 600 mm pattern of the range. Table stroke is 900 mm (35.4 in), wheelhead stroke 260 mm (10.2 in), rapid traverse 10 m/min (394 ipm) on both. The table swivels 0° to 10°. The centers are No. 4 Morse taper and carry 150 kg (331 lb), and a part on the work spindle alone may weigh 35 kg (77 lb).
Palmary's description of the series stresses the wheel end: a spindle of carburized, sub-zero treated alloy steel in hybrid hydro-static bearings. It carries a Ø405 mm wheel, 50 to 75 mm wide, on 5.5 kW (7.4 hp). Internal grinding is an optional attachment with a 0.75 kW (1.0 hp) spindle. With the standard FANUC controller, enclosure and linear scale the machine weighs 3,800 kg (8,377 lb) and needs 18 kVA.
