How much does the Niigata BFN63E cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Niigata BFN63E that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Facing a flange, cutting a seal groove and boring three diameters normally means a lathe setup or a rack of special boring bars. The Niigata BFN63E does those jobs on a horizontal machining center, using a U-axis slide built into a rotating faceplate at the spindle. It is the larger of two BFN models, with a 630 mm × 630 mm pallet rated for 1,200 kg (2,646 lb).
Travels are 1,080 mm (42.5 in) in X, 880 mm (34.6 in) in Y and 830 mm (32.7 in) in Z, and the workpiece envelope is φ1,080 mm × 1,000 mm. Those figures track the HN63E, from which the BFN inherits its rigid column-traverse structure. The differences are at the spindle. Speed is 3,000 min-1, the shank is NC5-63 with two-face restraint, and Y rapid traverse is 20 m/min against 30 m/min for X and Z.
The faceplate is supported directly in the spindle head on large-diameter bearings. Its slide travels 65 mm (2.6 in) as standard, or 40 mm as an option, at up to 5 m/min. Niigata fits a movable balance mechanism inside the faceplate as standard and a locking stopper at centre to hold the origin. Because the tool radius is a programmable axis, bore sizes can be corrected from the control with the optional U-axis compensation function, and one tool covers a range of diameters. Niigata's stated benefits are fewer tools and fewer ATC cycles.
Tool storage is more generous than on the BFN50E: a 62-tool chain magazine as standard, chain options of 88 and 128 tools, and a 127-tool matrix option. The pallet indexes in 1° steps, with 0.001° as an option.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- U-axis faceplate turns facing, grooving and multi-diameter boring into machining-center operations
- 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) pallet load and φ1,080 mm × 1,000 mm workpiece
- 65 mm (2.6 in) of U travel with a counterbalance built into the faceplate
- 62-tool chain magazine as standard, with 88, 128 or 127-tool options
- Inherits the rigid structure of the HN series
Limitations
- 3,000 min-1 maximum spindle speed restricts small-diameter milling and drilling
- NC5-63 tool shank is specific to this spindle
- No spindle torque or power figure appears in the specification table
- Y travel is 880 mm, a little less than the 930 mm of the HN63E

Frequently Asked Questions
01
It rotates with the spindle and carries a slide, the U axis, that moves a tool radially under program control. This lets the machine face, groove, taper and bore like a lathe would, but with the workpiece stationary on the pallet. The slide travels 65 mm.
02
Up to φ1,080 mm in swing diameter and 1,000 mm high, weighing up to 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) evenly distributed on a 630 mm × 630 mm pallet. Travels are 1,080 mm, 880 mm and 830 mm in X, Y and Z.
03
Yes. Niigata states that, in addition to boring operations, machining center functions with general tools such as drills and end mills can be used as before. Keep in mind the 3,000 min-1 speed limit when planning small tools.
04
The standard magazine is a chain type holding 62 tools. Chain magazines of 88 and 128 tools and a matrix magazine of 127 tools are listed as options.
