Overview

The Niigata HN1000-S is a 1,000 mm pallet horizontal machining center that mixes two guideway types to move a large column quickly: 41 m/min (1,614 ipm) on X, Y and Z. Its envelope is the same as the all-sliding HN100D-II, with travels of 2,030 mm, 1,650 mm and 1,200 mm and a workpiece of φ2,300 mm × 1,850 mm, so the S model is best understood as the productivity version of that machine.

Niigata's term is hybrid guide system. X and Z are carried on high-rigidity roller guides. Y keeps the maker's traditional square sliding way, hardened, polished and hand-scraped, because the spindle head rides on it and that is where damping and tool life are decided. Around the guides Niigata quotes three changes against the previous series: a base made 25% thicker, Z-axis guide spacing widened by 75%, and a monster column with 40% more rigidity.

The standard spindle differs from the HN-D machines too. A two-stage gear system gives 1,200 N·m (885 lb-ft) and 37 kW (49.6 hp) at up to 6,000 min-1. That is more power and less torque than the classic HN spindle, which remains available here as the high torque option at 1,948 N·m and 30 kW. A third choice, 15,000 min-1 with 400 N·m and 45 kW, covers light-alloy work.

The pallet carries 3,500 kg (7,716 lb), or 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) as an option. Indexing is 1° with a 0.001° option, and the magazine starts at 62 tools. Niigata also notes that the structure is suited to mounting a bar head, which is the basis of the separate HN1000-S BAR.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 41 m/min (1,614 ipm) rapids with 2,030 mm of X travel
  • Roller guides on X and Z, hand-scraped sliding way on Y
  • 37 kW (49.6 hp) standard spindle with 1,200 N·m (885 lb-ft)
  • Three spindle choices, including 1,948 N·m high torque and 15,000 min-1 high power options
  • Base 25% thicker and column 40% more rigid than the previous series, by Niigata's figures

Limitations

  • Standard torque of 1,200 N·m is below the 1,948 N·m that comes as standard on the HN100D-II
  • X and Z do not have sliding ways, which some heavy-cutting shops prefer on every axis
  • The 5,000 kg pallet load and 0.001° indexing are both options

Best For

Large frames and housings up to φ2,300 mm × 1,850 mm made in series Steel and cast-iron parts where 37 kW can be used at medium spindle speeds Jobs with many positioning moves across a 2,030 mm X stroke Shops choosing between high torque and high speed spindles for one platform

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the hybrid guide system on the Niigata HN1000-S?

The X and Z axes use high-rigidity roller guides for high-speed and heavy cutting, and the Y axis uses Niigata's traditional sliding structure with a hardened, polished guide surface and a hand-scraped slide. The combination is what allows 41 m/min rapid traverse on each axis.

02 Which spindles can the HN1000-S be ordered with?

Three are listed. The standard spindle is 6,000 min-1, 1,200 N·m and 37 kW. The high torque specification is 6,000 min-1, 1,948 N·m and 30 kW. The high-power specification is 15,000 min-1, 400 N·m and 45 kW. The last two are options, and all use BT50 tooling.

03 What is the difference between the HN1000-S and the HN100D-II?

Pallet size, travels and maximum workpiece are identical. The HN1000-S rapids at 41 m/min with roller guides on two axes and a 1,200 N·m standard spindle. The HN100D-II rapids at 30 m/min on sliding guides and has the 1,948 N·m spindle as standard.

04 How much weight can the HN1000-S pallet take?

3,500 kg (7,716 lb) as standard, with 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) shown as an option. The pallet is 1,000 mm × 1,000 mm and the workpiece may be up to φ2,300 mm in swing and 1,850 mm high.
