Modig Mill-Ex — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Modig Mill-Ex that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Modig or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Modig Mill-Ex is a horizontal twin-spindle machining center for long aluminum and composite parts held in rotary fixtures. It takes parts up to 2,500 mm (100 in) long, within a maximum interference diameter of 520 mm (20 in) and a weight of 500 kg (1,102 lbs). X travel is 2,570 mm (101 in) and Z travel is 360 mm (14 in).

The second spindle is the reason to look at this model. The spindle rows give up to 30,000 rpm and up to 42 kW (56 hp) S1 on HSK-A63, and tool storage is 20 tools for each spindle, so neither spindle waits on a shared magazine. Tool change is listed as 5 sec; the table does not say whether that is chip to chip. How the two spindles divide a part, whether they cut at the same time or work different zones, is not in the table and is the first thing to ask Modig.

The part turns in rotary fixtures at 0-60 rpm. Three rotary axes are listed: A1 and A2 at +/-190 degrees and A3 at 180 degrees. With the part rotating, horizontal spindles can get around the faces of a long section without re-clamping, as long as it stays inside the 520 mm (20 in) interference diameter.

Feed is listed as 0-80 / 0-80 / 0-70 m/min (0-3,150 / 0-3,150 / 0-2,755 in/min) across three linear axes, with 15 m/s² (49 ft/s²) of acceleration. On parts with many short features the acceleration counts for more than the top feed, because the axes rarely reach full speed between cuts. The HHV2 is listed with the same 42 kW (56 hp) S1 and HSK-A63 and with 12 or 24 tools; the Mill-Ex has 2 spindles with 20 tools each.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two spindles with 20 tools for each spindle, so a tool change on one does not depend on the other
  • 15 m/s² (49 ft/s²) acceleration with feeds of 0-80 / 0-80 / 0-70 m/min (0-3,150 / 0-3,150 / 0-2,755 in/min)
  • Tool change is listed at 5 sec
  • Parts up to 2,500 mm (100 in) long and 500 kg (1,102 lbs) in rotary fixtures turning at 0-60 rpm
  • Spindle speed up to 30,000 rpm with up to 42 kW (56 hp) S1 on HSK-A63
  • Three rotary axes: A1 and A2 at +/-190 degrees, A3 at 180 degrees

Limitations

  • Z travel is 360 mm (14 in) and the interference diameter 520 mm (20 in), so only slender parts fit
  • 20 tools for each spindle is a small magazine for parts with many different features
  • Part weight is limited to 500 kg (1,102 lbs)
  • Aluminum and composite only; no spindle torque is listed
  • No Y travel is given, although the feed row lists three linear axes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size part fits the Modig Mill-Ex?

Up to 2,500 mm (100 in) long and 500 kg (1,102 lbs), within a maximum interference diameter of 520 mm (20 in). X travel is 2,570 mm (101 in), a little more than the part length, and Z travel is 360 mm (14 in).

02 How are the two spindles on the Mill-Ex equipped?

The table lists 2 spindles with 20 tools for each spindle, an HSK-A63 interface, speed up to 30,000 rpm and power up to 42 kW (56 hp) S1. Tool change is 5 sec. It does not say whether both spindles cut the same part at once or how the work is divided, so ask Modig for the process on your part.

03 How fast is the Mill-Ex?

Feed is listed as 0-80 / 0-80 / 0-70 m/min (0-3,150 / 0-3,150 / 0-2,755 in/min) for X, Y and Z, and acceleration is 15 m/s² (49 ft/s²). The rotary fixtures turn at 0-60 rpm, and a tool change is listed at 5 sec.

04 Which rotary axes does the Mill-Ex have?

Three are listed. A1 and A2 have a range of +/-190 degrees and A3 has 180 degrees. The rotary fixtures that hold the part turn at 0-60 rpm. The table does not describe which axis sits where, so the layout should be confirmed from Modig's drawings.

05 How does the Mill-Ex compare with the Modig HHV2?

On the shared rows the spindle rating is the same: the HHV2 lists 42 kW (56 hp) S1, 0-30,000 rpm and HSK-A63, and the Mill-Ex lists up to 42 kW (56 hp) S1, up to 30,000 rpm and HSK-A63. The Mill-Ex has 2 spindles with 20 tools each. The HHV2 lists 12 or 24 tools.

06 What materials is the Mill-Ex for?

Aluminum and composite. The spindle figures agree with that: up to 30,000 rpm and up to 42 kW (56 hp) S1, with no torque value in the table. It is not listed for steel or titanium.
