Overview

The Milltronics SL8-II is a CNC turning center fitted with an 8 in 3-jaw hydraulic chuck on an A2-6 spindle nose, turning parts up to 14 in (356 mm) in diameter and 21 in (533 mm) long. The spindle runs up to 4,000 rpm with 30/20 hp (22.4/14.9 kW) and 161 lb-ft (218 Nm) of torque.

Swing over the bed is 21.7 in (551 mm) and swing over the cross slide is 11.8 in (300 mm), so long work that has to pass over the cross slide is held to the smaller figure. X travel is 8 in (203 mm). Z travel is 21 in (533 mm), identical to the maximum turning length, which means there is no spare Z beyond the longest part the machine is rated for.

For bar and through-spindle work the limit is the draw tube, 2.54 in (65 mm) in diameter. Shafts are supported by a tailstock with an MT4 quill, 2.28 in (58 mm) in diameter and 3.46 in (88 mm) of travel.

The 12-station turret indexes in both directions and takes 1 in (25 mm) shank tools and boring bars up to 1.5 in (38 mm). Rapids on X and Z are 1,182 ipm (30.0 m/min), and Milltronics lists positioning accuracy of ±0.0002 in (±0.005 mm) with repeatability of 0.0002 in (0.005 mm). The table has no rows for driven tools, a Y axis or a second spindle, so treat this as a two-axis lathe unless Milltronics confirms otherwise.

It weighs 8,885 lb (4,030 kg), measures 142.8 x 88.3 in (3,627 x 2,243 mm) in nominal operating footprint and 83.7 in (2,126 mm) in height, and draws 26 kVA / 64 A from a 208-240 V, 3-phase supply. The operator works from a 15 in LCD colour touch screen.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 30/20 hp (22.4/14.9 kW) and 161 lb-ft (218 Nm) behind an 8 in 3-jaw hydraulic chuck
  • 4,000 rpm top speed, against 3,000 rpm on the SL10-II
  • 12-station bi-directional turret for 1 in (25 mm) tools and 1.5 in (38 mm) boring bars
  • Positioning accuracy of ±0.0002 in (±0.005 mm) and repeatability of 0.0002 in (0.005 mm)
  • MT4 tailstock with 3.46 in (88 mm) of quill travel for supporting shafts

Limitations

  • Maximum turning length uses the full 21 in (533 mm) of Z travel; the SL10-II turns 29.9 in (759 mm)
  • Bar and through-spindle work is capped by the 2.54 in (65 mm) draw tube
  • Torque is 161 lb-ft (218 Nm), well under the 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of the SL10-II for heavy cuts on large diameters
  • No driven-tool, Y-axis or second-spindle rows appear in the table, so milled features call for another operation unless Milltronics confirms an option

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size parts can the SL8-II turn?

Up to 14 in (356 mm) in diameter and 21 in (533 mm) in length. Swing over the bed is 21.7 in (551 mm) and swing over the cross slide is 11.8 in (300 mm). The chuck listed is an 8 in 3-jaw hydraulic chuck, and the draw tube is 2.54 in (65 mm) in diameter.

02 What are the spindle figures for the SL8-II?

The A2-6 spindle is listed at up to 4,000 rpm, 30/20 hp (22.4/14.9 kW) and 161 lb-ft (218 Nm). The table gives two power ratings without labelling them, so ask Milltronics which one is the continuous rating.

03 Should I choose the SL8-II or the SL10-II?

The SL10-II is the larger lathe: a 10 in 3-jaw hydraulic chuck on an A2-8 nose, 17.7 in (450 mm) maximum turning diameter, 29.9 in (759 mm) turning length and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm), but only 3,000 rpm. The SL8-II turns 14 in (356 mm) by 21 in (533 mm), makes 161 lb-ft (218 Nm) and reaches 4,000 rpm, so it suits smaller, faster work.

04 What tooling does the SL8-II turret take?

The turret has 12 stations with bi-directional indexing. It takes 1 in (25 mm) shank turning tools and boring bars up to 1.5 in (38 mm). No driven-tool figures are listed for this model.

05 What does the SL8-II need for installation?

Floor space of 142.8 x 88.3 in (3,627 x 2,243 mm) nominal operating, 83.7 in (2,126 mm) of height and a floor that takes 8,885 lb (4,030 kg). Electrical supply is 26 kVA / 64 A at 208-240 V, 3-phase.
