Harrison Alpha 1460XS — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Harrison Alpha 1460XS that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Colchester or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

A 78 mm (3.1 in) spindle bore as standard is the headline of the Harrison Alpha 1460XS. This mid-size CNC/manual combination lathe swings 460 mm (18.1 in) over the bed, is offered with 1,500 / 2,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 in) between centres and drives its D1-8 camlock spindle with 11 kW (14.8 hp) over a range of 1 - 2,200 rpm.

The gap is unusually generous. Swing in the gap is 730 mm (28.7 in), far beyond the bed swing, so a large flange or pulley can be faced close to the chuck even though the lathe is nominally a 460 mm (18.1 in) machine. Swing over the cross slide is 270 mm (10.6 in), and that is the figure to use for anything longer than the gap.

The chuck listed is 10 in (254 mm), the same size as on the Harrison Alpha 1400XS. With a bigger D1-8 nose and more power behind it, the 1460XS is the sturdier platform for that chuck, and the nose leaves room to fit larger workholding from the 3-jaw and 4-jaw options.

For the operator it works like any Alpha XS. A key selects manual operation with DRO-style displays, the question-and-answer Alpha System, Manual Guide i with 3D simulation, or full G-code CNC, all on a Fanuc 0i-TF Plus with a 10.4 in colour touch screen. A Dickson quick change tool post is the standard tool carrier on UK machines, with an auto indexing turret as an option. For 2,000 mm (78.7 in) shafts, the travelling and stationary steady rests on the options list deserve a place on the order.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 78 mm (3.1 in) spindle bore on a D1-8 camlock nose
  • Swing in the gap of 730 mm (28.7 in) for large-diameter facing work
  • 11 kW (14.8 hp) spindle with a 1 - 2,200 rpm range
  • Bed lengths of 1,500 / 2,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 in) between centres
  • Manual, semi-automatic and CNC modes on a Fanuc 0i-TF Plus touchscreen control

Limitations

  • Swing over the cross slide is only 270 mm (10.6 in)
  • Listed chuck is 10 in (254 mm), no larger than on the smaller Harrison Alpha 1400XS
  • No C-axis or driven tools; Colchester's XC range does not include this size
  • Top speed of 2,200 rpm limits surface speed on small diameters

Best For

Tube and bar up to the 78 mm (3.1 in) bore Short, large-diameter parts faced in the 730 mm (28.7 in) gap Shafts up to 2,000 mm (78.7 in) between centres Jobbing shops moving between manual one-offs and programmed batches

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size work fits the Harrison Alpha 1460XS?

Swing over the bed is 460 mm (18.1 in), swing in the gap 730 mm (28.7 in) and swing over the cross slide 270 mm (10.6 in). Distance between centres is 1,500 / 2,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 in). The spindle bore is 78 mm (3.1 in).

02 What spindle power and speed does it have?

Spindle motor power is 11 kW (14.8 hp) and the speed range is 1 - 2,200 rpm. The spindle nose is a D1-8 camlock. That places it between the 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) Harrison Alpha 1400XS and the 15 kW (20.1 hp) Harrison Alpha 1550XS.

03 Is there a driven-tool version of this size?

Colchester's site lists XC turn-mill models in three other sizes, and none at this one. The table for this machine answers No for C-axis and driven tools. An auto indexing tool turret without driven tools is available as an option.

04 What equipment is standard?

Colchester lists the Fanuc 0i-TF Plus control with a 10.4 in colour touch screen, Manual Guide i, the ALPHA manual and semi-automatic conversational system and a manual tailstock. UK-specification machines also get a PBI Super Precision 3-jaw scroll chuck and a Dickson quick change tool post with holders.
