Overview

The Mazak Slant Turn is Yamazaki Mazak's heavy-duty large-bore CNC turning center series, built for shops that need to swing big parts with serious cutting power. Available in 500, 550, and 600 sizes with 18 and 21-inch chucks, the Slant Turn handles workpieces that standard production lathes simply cannot accommodate.

The Slant Turn 500 runs an 18-inch chuck with spindle bore options up to 185 mm (7.28 in). The 550 and 600 step up to 21-inch chucks with spindle bores up to 275 mm (10.83 in) and 375 mm (14.76 in) respectively. Max turning diameter is 910 mm (35.83 in) across all models, and turning lengths range from 1,016 mm (40 in) to 4,099 mm (161.38 in) depending on bed configuration.

The spindle motor delivers 45 kW (60 hp) with maximum torque of 7,000 Nm (5,163 ft-lbs), enough to take heavy cuts in large steel forgings, castings, and pipe without stalling. The M variants add live tooling for on-machine milling, drilling, and tapping to reduce secondary operations on large parts.

MAZATROL SmoothG handles programming and operation. On a machine this size, conversational programming is particularly valuable because CAM programming for large turned parts often takes longer than describing the geometry to the control.

The Slant Turn competes with the Okuma LU/LB7000 series, Doosan Puma 4000/5100, and Hwacheon Hi-Tech 550/700. Pricing starts around $250,000 and climbs past $500,000 for long-bed M configurations. For shops turning large-diameter work, the Slant Turn's combination of swing, bore, power, and rigidity is hard to match. Specs sourced from Mazak Corporation published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 910 mm (35.83 in) max turning diameter handles work standard lathes cannot
  • 45 kW spindle with 7,000 Nm torque takes heavy cuts without stalling
  • Spindle bore options up to 375 mm for through-bore pipe and tube work
  • Turning lengths up to 4,099 mm for long shaft and roll work
  • M variants add live tooling to reduce large-part secondary operations
  • Steady rest capacity of 410 mm supports large flexible workpieces
  • MAZATROL SmoothG is efficient for programming large turned parts

Limitations

  • Starting at $250K and reaching $550K+, a major capital investment
  • Machine weight of 12,000-22,000 kg demands reinforced foundations
  • 1,600 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speed on small diameters
  • 15 m/min rapid traverse adds cycle time on long non-cutting moves
  • Substantial floor space requirements for long-bed configurations

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Mazak Slant Turn cost?

New pricing starts around $250,000 for a standard-bed ST-500 and can exceed $550,000 for a long-bed ST-600M.

02 Difference between ST-500, ST-550, and ST-600?

Same 910 mm max turning diameter and 45 kW spindle. Difference is spindle bore: ST-500 = 185 mm, ST-550 = 275 mm, ST-600 = 375 mm. The 550 and 600 use 21-inch chucks vs 18-inch on the 500.

03 Can it handle through-bore work?

Yes. Spindle bore options up to 375 mm on the ST-600 allow through-bore turning of pipe, tube, and hollow parts.

04 What foundation is needed?

Machine weight ranges from 12,000 to 22,000 kg. You need reinforced concrete designed for static weight plus dynamic cutting forces.

05 Slant Turn vs Okuma LU7000?

Both are top-tier heavy-duty turning centers. Mazak offers larger spindle bore options and MAZATROL programming. Okuma provides OSP control with THINC API. Performance is comparable.
