Johnford SL-120B — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Johnford SL-120B that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Johnford or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Johnford SL-120B is the largest lathe of the SL series by every measure the table offers: 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of Z travel, a 15 in chuck, a Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore and a 4 step transmission.

It is the model for long, heavy tubular work. Drill pipe and collars, casing, line pipe sections, long hydraulic cylinders and hollow rolls can be turned between the chuck and a tailstock that travels 2,700 mm, or fed through the spindle, which takes stock up to Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in). The 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor works through the four steps up to 2,000 rpm on an A2-11 nose with a Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in) bearing.

Beyond this point Johnford's range changes character. Its larger horizontal lathes are the ST series and the flat-bed LC series, which are different designs; within the 45° SL family, three metres with the B spindle is the limit.

Two printing slips affect this model's data, and they are worth knowing before comparing quotations. The weight is given as 17,000 kg with an inch value where the pound figure belongs. The tailstock travel carries an inch figure that does not convert from 2,700 mm. On this page both rows show the metric value only.

Other figures are consistent with the rest of the frame: Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) swing over the bed, Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide, 295 mm (11.6 in) of X, ±50 mm (±2 in) of Y on the Y-axis version, 7,485 mm (294.7 in) of length.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of Z travel with the big-bore B spindle
  • Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) bar capacity through a Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore
  • 4 step transmission, A2-11 nose, Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in) bearing
  • Tailstock travel of 2,700 mm with an Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) quill
  • 45° bed with a full enclosure for the machining area

Limitations

  • Two rows of the maker's table for this model carry wrong bracket values
  • 2,000 rpm and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), no stronger than the SL-70B
  • 7,485 mm (294.7 in) long before any stock support behind the spindle
  • Steady rests are optional accessories

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the longest part the SL-120B can turn?

Z travel is 3,000 mm (118.1 in), or 2,900 mm (114.1 in) with the Y-axis. Tailstock travel is 2,700 mm, or 2,600 mm with the Y-axis. Stock up to Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) can also pass through the spindle.

02 How heavy is the SL-120B?

17,000 kg according to the maker's table. The bracket beside that figure contains an inch value by mistake, so no pound figure is given. The SL-100B weighs 16,000 kg (35,200 lb).

03 What spindle does the SL-120B have?

An A2-11 nose with a Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore and a Ø180 mm (Ø7.1 in) bearing, a 4 step transmission, a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor and a top speed of 2,000 rpm. Chuck size is 15 in.

04 What is the difference between the SL-120B and the SL-120A?

The SL-120A has a 12 in chuck, a Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore, Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity, a 2 step Auto transmission and 3,000 rpm. Bed length, swing and the 7,485 mm (294.7 in) machine length are the same on both.
