Overview

On the Johnford ST-40CH the optional 610 mm (24 in) chuck finally has room. Swing over the cross slide is 700 mm (27.6 in), so the carriage passes under a chuck that the plain ST-40C, at 600 mm (23.6 in), cannot clear.

That makes this the short heavy chucker of the ST series in its complete form: an A2-15 spindle with a 152 mm (6 in) bore, a 510 mm (20.1 in) chuck as standard, 920 mm (36.2 in) of swing over the bed and 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel. X travel is 370 mm (14.6 in), on a 7 kW servo motor.

Power is 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp), with 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) as the option. The four-speed transmission reaches 1,500 rpm with the belt-type gearbox, 1,400 rpm in the optional version and 1,200 rpm with the geared headstock. For interrupted, heavy cuts on forgings and castings the geared headstock is the alternative to consider.

The bearing diameter is 200 mm (7.9 in) and bar capacity 139 mm (5.5 in). Tailstock travel is 500 mm (19.7 in). The machine weighs 11,250 kg (24,750 lb) on the same 5,132 x 2,270 mm (202 x 89.4 in) footprint as the other 800 mm models.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why choose the ST-40CH over the ST-40C?

For clearance and stronger axes. The ST-40C swings 600 mm (23.6 in) over the cross slide and has 4 kW axis motors. The ST-40CH swings 700 mm (27.6 in), which clears the optional 610 mm (24 in) chuck, and has 7 kW motors.

02 What speeds does the ST-40CH spindle have?

1,500 rpm as standard and 1,400 rpm as an option with the belt type gear box, and 1,200 rpm with the geared headstock. The transmission has four automatic speeds.

03 What is the weight of the ST-40CH?

11,250 kg (24,750 lb). The ST-40C is listed at 11,150 kg (24,530 lb) and the ST-40CX, on the next frame up, at 11,350 kg (24,970 lb).

04 What travels does the ST-40CH have?

370 mm (14.6 in) on X and 800 mm (31.5 in) on Z, with rapids of 15 m/min and 18 m/min. An optional Y axis adds ±75 mm (±3 in).
