Overview

The H in Johnford ST-40AH stands for a higher frame. Against the plain ST-40A it swings 920 mm (36.2 in) over the bed and 700 mm (27.6 in) over the cross slide, with the same 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel.

What is striking is how little else moves. The table gives both machines the same outside dimensions, 5,132 x 2,270 x 2,765 mm (202 x 89.4 x 108.9 in), and the same weight of 11,000 kg (24,200 lb); the ST-40A swings 790 mm (31.1 in) and 600 mm (23.6 in). Two things do change with the frame: X travel goes from 320 mm (12.6 in) on the ST-40A to 370 mm (14.6 in), and the X and Z servo motors from 4 kW to 7 kW.

The spindle is the fast A unit, 3,000 rpm with the standard 304 mm (12 in) chuck and 91 mm (3.6 in) bar capacity. A large swing with a small, fast spindle is an unusual pairing. It fits thin, wide parts such as covers, discs and light housings, held in the optional 381 mm (15 in) chuck or on a fixture, where diameter is large but mass and cutting forces are not.

Rapids stay at 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z. The tailstock has 500 mm (19.7 in) of travel and an MT#5 quill.
