Overview
The Mazak MULTIPLEX W is a twin-spindle, twin-turret CNC turning center designed for high-production environments where cycle time and spindle utilization matter above all else. Available in W-200 (8-inch chuck) and W-300 (10-inch chuck) configurations, the MULTIPLEX W processes parts on both spindles simultaneously, effectively doubling throughput compared to a single-spindle machine.
The MULTIPLEX W-200 runs two symmetrical 8-inch chuck spindles with a max turning diameter of 320 mm (12.6 in) and 180 mm (7.09 in) of turning length. The W-300 steps up to two 10-inch chucks with 430 mm (16.93 in) max turning diameter and 225 mm (8.86 in) turning length. Both feature built-in motor spindles delivering 18.5 kW (25 hp) per spindle at up to 5,000 RPM.
The Y-axis variants (W-200Y and W-300Y) add off-center milling capability with 100 mm and 150 mm of Y-axis travel respectively. Each turret carries 12 tool positions with live tooling. The symmetrical spindle layout means both spindles and turrets can operate independently or in coordinated mode.
MAZATROL SmoothG handles the programming complexity of coordinating two spindles and two turrets. The control's built-in synchronization features manage automatic workpiece transfer between spindles.
The MULTIPLEX W competes with the Nakamura-Tome WT series, Okuma TWIN STAR, and DMG Mori NZX. It is built for production shops running medium to high volumes where maximizing spindle uptime drives profitability. Specs sourced from Mazak Corporation published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Twin-spindle, twin-turret architecture doubles throughput
- Automatic workpiece transfer enables rough-on-one, finish-on-the-other workflow
- Each spindle runs independently at 18.5 kW and 5,000 RPM
- 24 total tool positions across two 12-station turrets
- Y-axis variants add off-center milling on both turrets
- Replaces two conventional lathes while using less floor space
- MAZATROL SmoothG synchronization simplifies dual-spindle programming
Limitations
- Starting at $220K, costs more than two entry-level single-spindle lathes combined
- Programming dual-spindle synchronized operations requires experienced programmers
- Turning length limited to 180-225 mm restricts to short chucking work only
- If one spindle goes down, the entire machine may need to stop
- Higher setup complexity reduces benefit on short-run work

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base pricing starts around $220,000 for the W-200 and climbs to $380,000 for a fully loaded W-300Y.
02
W-200 has 8-inch chucks with 12.6-inch max diameter. W-300 has 10-inch chucks with 16.93-inch max diameter.
03
Yes. Both spindle/turret units operate independently. You can run different parts or operations simultaneously.
04
Both are excellent twin-spindle production machines. Nakamura-Tome is stronger in small-parts. MULTIPLEX W offers MAZATROL programming and wider chuck range.
05
Generally no. Dual-spindle delivers benefits on 1,000+ piece runs where cycle time savings compound. For short runs, a Quick Turn MSY is more cost-effective.
