Overview

On the Johnford SL-50-2S a sub-spindle with an 8 in chuck takes the place of the tailstock, opposite a 10 in main chuck. Z travel is 500 mm (19.7 in) and the bed swings Ø580 mm (Ø22.8 in).

A detail separates it from the single-spindle SL-50. That model has a 2 step automatic gearbox; the SL-50-2S lists a one step transmission for its 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) main motor, at the same 3,500 rpm. The twin-spindle version is laid out for cycle time on medium parts, not for heavy low-speed roughing.

The sub-spindle is a full working spindle. It has 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), an A2-6 nose with a Ø66 mm (Ø2.6 in) bore and runs to 4,500 rpm, so second-side turning is not restricted to light finishing.

From this size up, the table carries Y-axis data: ±40 mm (±1.6 in) of travel and a 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp) power turret motor. Fitting the Y-axis reduces the swing over the cross slide from Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in) to Ø380 mm (Ø15 in). With the optional C+Y axis and live tool turret, a part can be turned, milled and drilled on both sides and dropped complete.

The machine is 4,400 mm (173.2 in) long and weighs 6,500 kg (14,300 lb). Rapids are 15 / 10 / 18 / 18 m/min (591 / 394 / 709 / 709 ipm) on X1, Y, Z1 and Z2. For longer parts there is the SL-60-2S with 900 mm (35.4 in) of Z.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the sub-spindle of the SL-50-2S like?

An 8 in chuck on an A2-6 nose, Ø51 mm (Ø2 in) bar capacity, a Ø66 mm (Ø2.6 in) bore, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) and 4,500 rpm with a one step transmission.

02 How does the SL-50-2S differ from the SL-50A-2S?

The SL-50A-2S has a 12 in main chuck, Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity and a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) main motor with a 2 step Auto transmission. The SL-50-2S has a 10 in chuck and 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) with one step. Both weigh 6,500 kg (14,300 lb).

03 What happens to the swing when the Y-axis is fitted?

The table gives a swing over the cross slide of Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in) for the standard machine and Ø380 mm (Ø15 in) for the Y-axis version. Y travel is ±40 mm (±1.6 in).

04 How fast are the SL-50-2S axes?

Rapid traverse is 15 / 10 / 18 / 18 m/min (591 / 394 / 709 / 709 ipm) for X1, Y, Z1 and Z2. X travel is 250 mm (9.8 in) and Z travel 500 mm (19.7 in).
