Overview

The GTD-44/65F CNC is a facing lathe: a short-bed machine with no tailstock, made for large-diameter, short parts such as flanges, rings, wheels and discs. Swing over the bed is 44 in (1,120 mm), and Expand Machinery's title gives 44 and 65 in as the two swing sizes. Z travel is just 39.37 in (1,000 mm), and the chuck and turret chosen may reduce it.

A 30 HP (22 kW) motor drives the spindle from 6 to 500 rpm through 4 automatically selectable gear ranges of 6 - 35, 19 - 112, 70 - 350 and 226 - 500 rpm, each infinitely variable. For facing work this matters more than top speed, because constant surface speed across a large face needs both very low rpm at the rim and torque to go with it. The spindle bore is 6 in (152 mm) on an A2-11 nose, with 9, 10 and 12 in bores optional.

X-axis cross slide travel is 21.66 in (550 mm) with the standard 4-position turret, and swing over the cross slide is 23.63 in (600 mm). Tool shanks are large, 40 x 40 mm (1.57 x 1.57 in) for OD tools and 50 mm (1.97 in) for ID holders, 4 of which are included. Both axes use 5.3 HP (4 kW) servo motors and rapid at 196 in/min (5,000 mm/min).

The machine comes enclosed, with a full splash guard, a rear-discharge link-belt chip conveyor, a built-in high-capacity coolant system and a 3-light status lamp. The Fanuc control has a 10.4 in screen, and the threading functions listed cover inch and metric, left and right hand, and single or multiple starts. The 44 in swing version measures 167 x 99 x 84 in.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is a facing lathe, and why does the GTD-44/65F CNC have no tailstock?

A facing lathe is built for short parts of large diameter that are held in the chuck alone, so the bed is short and there is nothing at the far end to obstruct the face. Expand Machinery states that there is no tailstock with this machine. Z travel is 39.37 in (1,000 mm) and swing over the bed is 44 in (1,120 mm).

02 What are the spindle speeds and gear ranges?

Spindle speed is 6 - 500 rpm in 4 automatically selectable gear ranges: 6 - 35 rpm, 19 - 112 rpm, 70 - 350 rpm and 226 - 500 rpm, each infinitely variable. The spindle motor is 30 HP (22 kW).

03 What are the axis travels and feeds?

X-axis cross slide travel is 21.66 in (550 mm) with the standard 4-position turret and Z-axis travel is 39.37 in (1,000 mm), which the chuck and turret type may reduce. Rapid feed is 196 in/min (5,000 mm/min) and cutting feed 118 in/min (3,000 mm/min) on both axes.

04 What is included with the machine?

The feature list names an automatic 4-way toolpost, a full splash guard, a link-belt rear discharge chip conveyor, a built-in high-capacity coolant system, a large worklight, a 3-light machine condition lamp and a Fanuc control with a 10.4 in screen. Four ID toolholders with a 50 mm (1.97 in) bore are included.

05 Can a larger turret be fitted?

Yes. The standard tool post is an automatic 4-way, 4-station type that takes any mix of ID and OD tools. Larger vertical turrets are offered as options, but the page gives two different sets of station counts for them, so confirm the available sizes with Expand Machinery.
