Overview
The Johnford LC-40 is the smallest of Johnford's CNC flat-bed heavy lathes, and it is configured to order far more than the slant-bed ST machines are. It swings 1,010 mm (39.8 in) over the bed and 640 mm (25.2 in) over the cross slide on a bed 1,145 mm (45 in) wide.
Length is chosen first. Johnford lists distances between centers of 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000, 6,000, 7,000, 8,000 and 9,000 mm, and up to 20,000 mm, and names the models by size: 4080, 40120, 40160 and so on to 40480. Weights are given for eight of them, from 22,000 kg (model 4080) to 36,000 kg (model 40360).
The headstock is chosen next, from ten spindle variants lettered B to K. B has an A2-11 nose, a Ø132.5 mm bore and 2,000 rpm. K has an A2-32 nose, a Ø610 mm bore and 220 rpm. All use an automatic 4-speed gearbox. The standard motor is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), with 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) optional.
The machine is delivered without a chuck and with a 4-post square turret; the table also lists 4 / 6 / 8 / 12 position turrets and, as an option, a twin turret. The rotary tailstock quill is Ø250 mm (9.8 in) with 250 mm (9.8 in) of travel and an MT#6 taper.
