Overview
The Johnford ST-100CH is a 2,400 mm (94.5 in) lathe for roll bodies and other heavy cylinders up to 800 mm (31.5 in) over the cross slide, driven by the A2-15 spindle.
A roll body is usually turned along its full length in long passes, then finished. Long passes at large diameter are steady, high-torque cutting, and the drive is arranged for it: 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) through four automatic speeds, with 37 / 45 kW (49.6 / 60.3 hp) as an option. If the cut is interrupted, as on a welded or cast surface, the geared headstock at 1,200 rpm is the alternative to the belt-type gearbox at 1,500 rpm.
Cross travel of 420 mm (16.5 in) takes the tool from the body diameter down to the journals. On the ST-100C, which has 370 mm (14.6 in) of X travel and 700 mm (27.6 in) of swing over the cross slide, the same roll may not fit.
