Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford SL-80A that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Two metres between chuck and centre: the Johnford SL-80A has 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel on the large SL bed, with a 12 in chuck and the 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) A spindle.
At this length the lathe becomes a shaft machine first and a chucker second. Typical parts are marine and industrial drive shafts, long hydraulic rods and cylinder tubes, printing and paper machine rolls, axles for rail and heavy vehicles. They are loaded by crane, driven by the chuck and supported at the far end by a tailstock that travels 1,700 mm (66.9 in). Its quill, Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) across, is as thick as some of the shafts it supports.
Swing over the cross slide is Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in), so a roll body or a flange of half a metre clears the slide along the whole bed. That figure, not the Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) over the bed, is the one to check against the part drawing.
The spindle offers 3,000 rpm, or 2,800 rpm as the optional figure, through a 2 step automatic gearbox. Bar capacity is Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in), Ø102 mm (Ø4 in) optionally, which matters when shaft blanks are fed through the Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore instead of being loaded between centres.
The SL-80A weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lb) and is 6,930 mm (272.8 in) long. Floor space behind the headstock for long stock, and in front for the chip conveyor, comes on top of that.
