Overview

The Johnford SL-70A is the entry to the large-sized SL series, the frame with Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) of swing over the bed and Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide. Z travel is 1,550 mm (61 in) and the chuck is 12 in.

Put it next to the SL-65A and the purpose is plain. The spindle is identical: A2-8 nose, Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), 2 step automatic transmission, 3,000 rpm. Z differs by a few centimetres. What the 70 frame adds is room around the part, with 295 mm (11.6 in) of X travel, and a machine weight of 14,000 kg (30,800 lb) against the 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) of the SL-65A.

The tailstock is scaled up with the bed. Quill diameter is Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) and quill travel 125 mm (4.9 in), with MT#5 for the fixed centre and for the optional rotary quill. The Y-axis option has more stroke as well, ±50 mm (±2 in), and a 3.8 kW Y servo motor.

Buyers looking at this model are usually turning parts with a large flange or body on a moderately long shaft: rotor shafts, large couplings with hubs, rolls with journals, crane wheels on their axles. The 12 in chuck with Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity can be raised to Ø102 mm (Ø4 in).

Note that the maker's table gives no usable rapid traverse figure for the large-sized models; the row is labelled in mm. The machine is 5,485 mm (216 in) long and 2,430 x 2,510 mm (95.7 x 98.8 in) in section.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) swing over the cross slide and 295 mm (11.6 in) of X travel
  • 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) spindle with a 2 step Auto transmission
  • Tailstock quill of Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) with 125 mm (4.9 in) of travel
  • 14,000 kg (30,800 lb) machine weight on a 45° bed
  • Y-axis option with ±50 mm (±2 in) of travel

Limitations

  • The spindle is no stronger than on the smaller SL-65A
  • Rapid traverse cannot be read from the maker's table for this series
  • Z travel of 1,550 mm (61 in) is the shortest of the large frame
  • 2,510 mm (98.8 in) high and 5,485 mm (216 in) long

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What swing does the SL-70A have?

Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) over the bed and Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide. X travel is 295 mm (11.6 in) and Z travel 1,550 mm (61 in), or 1,450 mm (57.1 in) with the Y-axis.

02 How does the SL-70A differ from the SL-70B?

The SL-70B has a 15 in chuck, an A2-11 nose, a Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore, Ø116 mm (Ø4.6 in) bar capacity, a 4 step transmission and 2,000 rpm. The SL-70A has a 12 in chuck, an A2-8 nose, a Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore, a 2 step Auto transmission and 3,000 rpm. Bed, travels and weight are the same.

03 Which longer versions of the SL-70A exist?

The SL-80A with 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel, the SL-100A with 2,500 mm (98.4 in) and the SL-120A with 3,000 mm (118.1 in). All use the same spindle and the same Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) bed.

04 What tailstock is fitted to the SL-70A?

A programmable hydraulic tailstock is standard for this size. Travel is 1,200 mm (47.2 in), or 1,100 mm (43.3 in) with the Y-axis; the quill is Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) with 125 mm (4.9 in) of stroke and an MT#5 centre.
