Overview

The Johnford SL-65A is the heavy shaft lathe of the medium SL series. It has the longest bed, 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of Z travel, and the 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) A spindle with a 12 in chuck.

Rigidity over length is the theme. The spindle sits on a Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) bearing and is geared in two automatic steps. The bed is inclined at 45° with box ways on all axes. The programmable hydraulic tailstock, standard on this size, pushes an Ø85 mm (Ø3.3 in) quill against the part with an MT#5 centre. At 11,000 kg (24,200 lb) the machine has the mass to rough a forged shaft a metre and a half long without chatter setting the limit early.

Where does it stop? At diameter. Swing over the cross slide is Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in) and X travel 250 mm (9.8 in), as on every medium SL. A shaft with a large flange or a rotor with a wide body may clear the bed, Ø580 mm (Ø22.8 in), and still not pass the slide. The SL-70A is the answer then, with Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide, the same spindle and 1,550 mm (61 in) of Z.

Bar up to Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) passes the spindle, or Ø102 mm (Ø4 in) with the option. Spindle speed is 3,000 rpm, or 2,800 rpm in the optional configuration. The machine measures 5,275 mm (207.7 in) in length and 2,250 x 2,160 mm (88.6 x 85 in) in section.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the key figures of the SL-65A?

12 in chuck, Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity, Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) spindle bore, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), 3,000 rpm, Z travel 1,500 mm (59.1 in), tailstock travel 1,300 mm (51.1 in), weight 11,000 kg (24,200 lb).

02 How does the SL-65A compare with the SL-70A?

The SL-70A has the same spindle on a larger bed: Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) swing over the bed, Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide, 295 mm (11.6 in) of X, 1,550 mm (61 in) of Z and a weight of 14,000 kg (30,800 lb). The SL-65A swings Ø580 mm (Ø22.8 in) and Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in).

03 Does the SL-65A have a gearbox?

Yes. The spindle transmission is listed as 2 step Auto. It gives the 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor a low range for heavy cuts at large diameters.

04 What options suit long shaft work on the SL-65A?

Johnford-made manual steady rests, hydraulic steady rests, a rotary quill (MT#4) for the tailstock, and high pressure coolant through the turret at 20 bar or above are all on the options list.
