Overview

Everything the large HT frame offers is on the Johnford HT-40-2SD at once: two 12-station turrets, a main spindle chosen from five sizes, and a sub-spindle, on 1,000 mm (39.4 in) between centers with Ø750 mm (29.5 in) of swing.

The difficulty with a machine like this is matching the two ends. The main spindle can be as large as variant E, with a Ø610 mm (24 in) chuck and a Ø236 mm (9.3 in) bore. The sub-spindle is at most an A2-11 unit, an option, with a Ø132.5 mm (5.2 in) bore and a Ø381 mm (15 in) chuck. So a part held in a 20 in or 24 in chuck for the first side has to offer a diameter the smaller sub-spindle chuck can grip for the second.

Where the two ends are closer in size, as with variant A or B, the layout works like the small 2SD machines on a larger scale: both turrets busy, one per spindle. Variant A gives Ø315 mm (12 in) chucks on both sides and 3,000 rpm on both.

Unlike the HT-40-2D, both Z axes here travel the full 1,000 mm (39.4 in). X travel is 320 mm (12.6 in) per turret and the sub-spindle rapid on W is 10 m/min. With spindle A the machine weighs 18,000 kg (39,600 lb), the heaviest of the three HT-40 layouts.
