Overview

The Johnford SL-100A offers 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of Z travel, the second-longest bed of the large SL series, with the 12 in, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) A spindle.

A curious thing in the table is how little the machine grows for its extra half metre. Overall length is 6,985 mm (275 in), only slightly more than the 6,930 mm (272.8 in) given for the SL-80A, while the weight goes from 15,000 kg (33,000 lb) on the SL-80A to 16,000 kg (35,200 lb). Either the two share an enclosure length or one of the printed lengths is off. It is a reason to ask for a layout drawing before pouring a foundation.

The cutting data hold no surprises. Swing is Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) over the bed and Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide. X travel is 295 mm (11.6 in). The spindle has a Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore on a Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) bearing and runs to 3,000 rpm through a 2 step automatic transmission.

A part 2.5 metres long behaves like a spring. Even with the Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) tailstock quill engaged, a slender shaft will bow away from the tool in the middle, so the optional steady rests, manual or hydraulic, are effectively part of the machine for this bed length. The tailstock travels 2,200 mm (86.6 in).

For a Y-axis machine, the table gives ±50 mm (±2 in) of Y travel and a Z travel of 2,400 mm (94.5 in).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of Z travel and 2,200 mm (86.6 in) of tailstock travel
  • Ø540 mm (Ø21.3 in) over the cross slide for large roll bodies
  • Geared 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) spindle to 3,000 rpm
  • Ø91 mm (Ø3.6 in) bar capacity, Ø102 mm (Ø4 in) optional
  • 16,000 kg (35,200 lb) on a 45° bed

Limitations

  • Steady rests, needed for most parts of this length, are options
  • The printed machine length of 6,985 mm (275 in) is almost that of the shorter SL-80A and should be confirmed
  • Rapid traverse is not usable from the maker's table
  • 12 in chuck on a 2,500 mm bed

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the Z travel of the SL-100A?

2,500 mm (98.4 in), or 2,400 mm (94.5 in) with the Y-axis. Tailstock travel is 2,200 mm (86.6 in), or 2,100 mm (82.7 in) with the Y-axis.

02 How large is the SL-100A?

The table gives a length of 6,985 mm (275 in), a width and height of 2,430 x 2,510 mm (95.7 x 98.8 in) and a weight of 16,000 kg (35,200 lb).

03 What is the difference between the SL-100A and the SL-100B?

The SL-100B has the big-bore spindle: 15 in chuck, A2-11 nose, Ø132.5 mm (Ø5.2 in) bore, 4 step transmission, 2,000 rpm. The SL-100A has the 12 in chuck, an A2-8 nose, a Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore and 3,000 rpm. Both have 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of Z.

04 Can the SL-100A support long slender shafts?

The tailstock has a Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) quill with 125 mm (4.9 in) of travel and an MT#5 centre. Johnford-made manual steady rests and hydraulic steady rests are listed as optional accessories for intermediate support.
