Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford SL-60A-2S that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Johnford SL-60A-2S joins the two upgrades available on the medium twin-spindle bed, the 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) A spindle and the 900 mm (35.4 in) Z travel. It is the most capable of the four 2S models with Ø580 mm (Ø22.8 in) of swing.
Heavy shafts with work at both ends are its territory. A forged axle stub, a gearbox output shaft or a hydraulic motor shaft is roughed with the geared main spindle, which has a Ø160 mm (Ø6.3 in) bearing and a 2 step automatic transmission. Then the 8 in sub-spindle picks the part up so that the first-side chucking end can be turned, faced and bored.
One practical limit comes from the mismatch between the two ends. The main chuck is 12 in with a Ø115 mm (Ø4.5 in) bore; the sub-spindle chuck is 8 in with a Ø66 mm (Ø2.6 in) bore. A part must present a diameter the smaller chuck can grip, and anything that has to pass into the sub-spindle is limited to Ø51 mm (Ø2 in).
With the optional Y-axis, ±40 mm (±1.6 in), and a live tool turret, keyways, cross holes and flats are added in the same clamping, at the cost of swing over the cross slide, Ø380 mm (Ø15 in) instead of Ø450 mm (Ø17.7 in).
At 5,540 mm (218.1 in) this is the longest of the medium 2S machines. It weighs 7,800 kg (17,160 lb). High pressure coolant through the turret, 20 bar or above, is optional.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Main spindle: 12 in chuck, A2-8 nose (A2-11 optional), 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp), 3,000 rpm. Sub-spindle: 8 in chuck, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), 4,500 rpm. Z1/Z2 travel 900 mm (35.4 in), X travel 250 mm (9.8 in).
02
The SL-60A has a tailstock with 900 mm (35.4 in) of travel and 1,040 mm (40.9 in) of Z, and weighs 9,000 kg (19,800 lb). The SL-60A-2S replaces the tailstock with a sub-spindle, has 900 mm (35.4 in) of Z and weighs 7,800 kg (17,160 lb). The main spindle data are the same.
03
It carries an 8 in chuck on an A2-6 nose. The bore is Ø66 mm (Ø2.6 in) and bar capacity Ø51 mm (Ø2 in), so larger parts are gripped on a turned outside diameter.
04
The SL-70A-2S on the large bed: Ø700 mm (Ø27.6 in) swing over the bed, 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z travel, ±50 mm (±2 in) of Y on the Y-axis version and a weight of 14,000 kg (30,800 lb).
