Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford HT-30-2S that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Johnford HT-30-2S is a 45° slant-bed lathe with one 12-station turret working between two identical spindles: each has a Ø203.2 mm (8 in) chuck, a Ø51 mm (2 in) bar capacity, an A2-6 nose and 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) at up to 4,500 rpm.
That symmetry is the point of the machine. A part can be turned on one face in the main spindle, handed across on the W axis and finished on the other face with the same speed and power available, so neither operation has to be planned around a weaker spindle. Both spindles run one step, without a gearbox.
The envelope is short. Distance between centers is 550 mm (21.7 in), matched by 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z travel, and X travel is 160 mm (6.3 in). Swing over the cross slide is Ø300 mm (11.8 in), the smallest figure of the HT range; the HT-35-2S gives Ø330 mm (13 in) and a 10 in main chuck. Rapids are 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z and W.
As delivered the turret is a direct-mount, non-driven type with turning tool holders. Milling and cross drilling need the optional live tool 12-position turret in BMT or VDI and the optional C-axis; a Y axis on the upper turret is a further option. The control is a Fanuc 0i-TF PLUS with Manual Guide i. The machine weighs 7,500 kg (16,500 lb) and is 5,100 mm (200.8 in) long.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Two identical spindles: Ø203.2 mm (8 in) chuck, A2-6 nose and 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) on each side
- 4,500 rpm on both the main and the sub-spindle
- Ø51 mm (2 in) bar capacity through either spindle
- Rapids of 15 m/min on X and 18 m/min on Z and W
- Light for a twin-spindle lathe at 7,500 kg (16,500 lb), and 5,100 mm (200.8 in) long
Limitations
- Swing over the cross slide is only Ø300 mm (11.8 in)
- 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z travel limits shaft length
- The standard turret is non-driven; live tools, C-axis and Y axis are options
- One turret serves both spindles, so the two sides are not cut at the same time

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The HT-35-2S has a larger main spindle: a Ø254 mm (10 in) chuck, Ø76.5 mm (3 in) bar capacity and 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) at 3,500 rpm, with 760 mm (30 in) of Z travel. The HT-30-2S keeps both spindles at 8 in and 4,500 rpm on 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z.
02
Yes. Main and sub-spindle both carry a Ø203.2 mm (8 in) chuck on an A2-6 nose, with a Ø65 mm (2.6 in) bore, a Ø100 mm (3.9 in) bearing diameter, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) and a top speed of 4,500 rpm.
03
Not as standard. The machine is delivered with a 12-position direct-mount non-driven turret. A live tool 12-position turret in BMT or VDI, a C-axis and a Y axis on the upper turret are listed as options.
04
It measures 5,100 x 2,300 x 2,300 mm (200.8 x 90.6 x 90.6 in) and weighs 7,500 kg (16,500 lb). A chain type chip conveyor with trolley is part of the standard equipment.
