Overview

The Emco Emcoturn E45 is a universal turning centre for bar up to 45 (51) mm and chuck parts within a 220/300 mm turning diameter. What sets it apart inside the Emcoturn E range is how many ways it can be configured. Emco lists a plain version for stationary tools with tailstock, an MY version with driven tools, C axis and Y axis, and SM and SMY versions that swap the tailstock for a counter spindle.

That choice matters more than any single figure. With the tailstock, which travels 510 mm (20.1 in) and takes an MK4 centre, the machine is a shaft lathe with 670 mm (26.4 in) between centres. With the counter spindle it becomes a done-in-one machine for parts cut from bar. The counter spindle runs to 6,300 rpm on an A2-4 nose, one size below the A2-5 main spindle, and its torque row reads 42/43 Nm.

Main spindle power is 13 kW (17.4 hp). Speed and torque are each given as a pair, 6300 (5000) rpm and 78 (100) Nm; the bracketed values go with the larger 51 mm bar passage, so the bigger bore trades top speed for torque.

Y travel is +40/-30 mm, short but enough to mill a flat or drill off centre without a special holder. The 12-station turret is listed as VDI 25/30 with 6 driven positions rated 5,000 rpm, 4 kW (5.4 hp) and 16 Nm (11.8 lb-ft). At 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) and 2,575 x 1,760 x 1,960 mm (101.4 x 69.3 x 77.2 in) the machine is still a compact one.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Offered in tailstock, MY, SM and SMY versions, so one base machine covers shaft work and counter-spindle complete machining
  • Y axis with +40/-30 mm of travel on the MY and SMY versions
  • Counter spindle runs to 6,300 rpm on an A2-4 nose
  • Rapids listed as 24/10/30 m/min in X/Y/Z
  • Siemens, Fanuc or Heidenhain control on every version

Limitations

  • Only 6 of the 12 turret stations are driven, with 4 kW (5.4 hp) and 16 Nm (11.8 lb-ft)
  • Counter spindle and tailstock are alternatives: the SM and SMY versions are listed without a tailstock
  • The bracketed 5000 rpm main spindle speed applies when the larger bar passage is chosen
  • Y travel of +40/-30 mm limits off-centre milling to small features

Best For

Bar work up to 45 (51) mm with back-side finishing on the counter spindle Short shafts between centres, up to 670 mm (26.4 in) Turned parts with cross holes and flats that need a Y axis Job shops that want one compact lathe for mixed work

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Which versions of the Emcoturn E45 are available?

Emco lists the Emcoturn E45 for stationary tools with tailstock, the E45 MY with driven tools, C axis, Y axis and tailstock, the E45 SM with counter spindle, driven tools and C axis, and the E45 SMY, which adds the Y axis to the SM. All are offered with Siemens, Fanuc or Heidenhain controls.

02 What is the bar capacity of the Emcoturn E45?

The bar diameter row reads 45 (51) mm: 45 mm as the base passage and 51 mm as the larger one. The main spindle speed and torque rows change with it, 6300 (5000) rpm and 78 (100) Nm, so check which bore a quoted machine has.

03 How powerful are the driven tools?

The driven stations are rated 5,000 rpm, 4 kW (5.4 hp) and 16 Nm (11.8 lb-ft), and 6 of the 12 stations can carry them. That is sized for drilling, tapping and light milling on parts of this diameter.

04 How does the Emcoturn E45 compare with the Emcoturn E65?

The Emcoturn E65 is the next size up: 22 kW (29.5 hp) on an A2-6 nose, 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z travel and 12 driven stations. The E45 has 13 kW (17.4 hp), 510 mm (20.1 in) of Z and 6 driven stations, in a machine that weighs 4,000 kg (8,818 lb).
