Overview

On the Johnford HT-40-2D the two turrets do not travel the same distance. Z1 is 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and Z2 is 760 mm (29.9 in), on a bed with 1,000 mm (39.4 in) between centers and Ø750 mm (29.5 in) of swing.

That split is the first thing to plan around. One carriage covers the full length of the part; the other stops short, so a tool on the second turret cannot follow the first all the way along a full-length shaft. Balanced roughing is possible over the shared stretch, and beyond it the long-travel turret works alone.

It is a big machine for its length. Swing over the cross slide is Ø600 mm (23.6 in), each X axis travels 320 mm (12.6 in), and the tailstock quill is Ø200 mm (7.9 in) with an MT#7 taper and 200 mm (7.9 in) of travel. Tailstock travel is 700 mm (27.6 in).

The headstock is ordered as one of five variants. A and B, with A2-8 and A2-11 noses, take 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) through an Auto Hi-Lo transmission. C, D and E all use an A2-15 nose and 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) with four automatic steps, and run at 1,200 rpm, 1,000 rpm and 750 rpm. Machine weight is 17,000 kg (37,400 lb) with spindle A.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why does the HT-40-2D list two Z travels?

The row is for the Z1 and Z2 axes, one per turret. Z1 travels 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and Z2 travels 760 mm (29.9 in). Both X axes travel 320 mm (12.6 in).

02 What tailstock does the HT-40-2D have?

A programmable hydraulic tailstock with a rotary quill. The quill is Ø200 mm (7.9 in) in diameter, has an MT#7 taper and 200 mm (7.9 in) of travel, and the tailstock travels 700 mm (27.6 in) along the bed.

03 Which spindle noses are offered on the HT-40-2D?

A2-8 for variant A, A2-11 for variant B and A2-15 for variants C, D and E. The matching bores are Ø115 mm (4.5 in), Ø132.5 mm (5.2 in), Ø152 mm (6 in), Ø185 mm (7.3 in) and Ø236 mm (9.3 in).

04 How does the HT-40-2D differ from the HT-40-2S?

The HT-40-2D has two turrets and a tailstock. The HT-40-2S has one turret and a sub-spindle in place of the tailstock, and weighs 16,500 kg (36,300 lb) with spindle A against 17,000 kg (37,400 lb) here.
