Overview
The DN Solutions PUMA 1000 A is a heavy-duty horizontal CNC lathe built for turning large-diameter, long workpieces that smaller machines simply can't handle. With a max turning diameter of 1,000 mm (39 in) and a max turning length of 2,040 mm (80 in), this machine plays in a different weight class than the standard PUMA and LYNX platforms.
The spindle delivers 75 kW (101 hp) with a massive 11,011 N-m (8,121 ft-lb) of torque at up to 500 RPM. That's an order of magnitude more torque than a PUMA 2600 or 4100, because this machine's designed for facing, boring, and OD turning on heavy steel forgings, castings, and large-diameter bar stock. The chuck is order-made (custom to application), reflecting the specialized nature of this platform.
Axis travels are 540 mm on X and 2,130 mm on Z, with rapids at 12 m/min on X and 16 m/min on Z. Those rapids are slower than the compact LYNX and PUMA models, which is normal for a machine of this size — the mass being moved is dramatically higher. The 10-station turret indexes reliably for multi-operation programs.
The machine weighs 21,000 kg (46,297 lb) on a 6,595 mm x 3,210 mm footprint. You'll need a properly reinforced floor and an appropriate crane or rigging setup to install it. It runs FANUC control, same as the rest of the DN Solutions lineup.
The PUMA 1000 A is the faster-speed variant (500 RPM max) of the 1000 series, designed for parts where you need more surface speed — think steel shafts, rollers, and cylindrical components where the workpiece diameter puts you in a reasonable RPM range. For slower, higher-torque applications on even larger or heavier parts, the PUMA 1000 B drops to 300 RPM with a corresponding increase in available torque.
This machine's home is in heavy industry: energy, mining, marine, steel processing, and large-scale general engineering shops that regularly handle workpieces measured in feet, not inches.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 101 hp spindle with 11,011 N-m of torque handles massive roughing cuts on large-diameter forgings and castings
- 1,000 mm max turning diameter and 2,040 mm turning length cover most heavy-industry workpiece sizes
- 21,000 kg machine weight provides the mass and rigidity needed for vibration-free heavy cuts
- FANUC control maintains familiar programming across the DN Solutions lineup, even at this machine size
- 10-station turret supports multi-operation programs for complete heavy turning in a single setup
- Custom chuck sizing lets you match the workholding exactly to your application requirements
Limitations
- 500 RPM max spindle speed limits surface speed on smaller-diameter features of large workpieces
- 21,000 kg weight requires reinforced floors, significant rigging, and careful installation planning
- 12/16 m/min rapids are slow — non-cutting time adds up on long-travel moves
- Custom order-made chuck means longer lead times and no off-the-shelf replacement options
- 6,595 mm footprint demands substantial floor space that smaller shops may not have

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The A runs up to 500 RPM with 11,011 N-m torque, while the B drops to 300 RPM with 12,040 N-m torque. Same power (75 kW), same travels, but the B trades speed for more torque. The B is heavier at 23,000 kg. Choose the A for higher surface speeds on smaller-diameter zones, the B for maximum torque on the largest, heaviest cuts.
02
At 21,000 kg, you'll need a reinforced concrete foundation — typically 300-400 mm thick with rebar, depending on your soil conditions. The 6.6 m x 3.2 m footprint needs adequate clearance on all sides for chip removal, maintenance access, and overhead crane reach for loading large workpieces.
03
At this machine class, workpiece requirements vary dramatically between applications. Some shops need a 4-jaw independent chuck for irregular castings, others need a large 3-jaw for round stock, and some need faceplate setups. DN Solutions sizes the chuck to match the specific application at order time.
04
VTLs are better for short, wide parts like flanges and rings because gravity assists workholding. The PUMA 1000's horizontal configuration is better for long, cylindrical parts like shafts and rollers where the workpiece length exceeds its diameter. Many heavy shops own both types.
